The Canadian Child Care Federation is proud to announce Ellen Hamilton from Iqaluit, Nunavut as the 2015 Recipient of the CCCF Award of Excellence

Ellen Hamilton is the Manager, Early Childhood Education Programs at Nunavut Arctic College in Iqaluit. In August of 2013 Ellen began rebuilding the Early Childhood Education Program for Nunavut Arctic College by envisioning and developing a territory-wide ECE strategy. Through widespread consultations and research, she designed and now manages the delivery of two new programs that meet the cultural and professional needs of future child care workers and builds capacity in the existing Nunavut child care system.

Quebec government to cut $74 million in daycare costs

Daycare workers say they are concerned that the Couillard government's plans to slash $74 million from the daycare system this year will affect the quality of care children receive. "It's very stressful. We're sort of walking on eggshells," said Hallie Moyse, executive director of CPE Shalom, a daycare in Montreal.

Childcare dilemma heats up as summer looms in pricey Vancouver

Young school-age kids may be counting the days until the start of summer holidays but many of their parents are frantically calculating the high cost of nine full weeks of summer childcare. "It's definitely a real struggle," says Vancouver parent Melanie Barker. "I'm probably going to have to take some time off, and I'm not exactly sure how that's going to work because I'm not sure I can afford that."

There are blue, red and yellow paint splotches on the floor of the airy upstairs hallway of Fraser Mustard Early Learning Academy. They are rubbed in so hard into the new vinyl tile it will take some heavy-duty cleaning to scrub them out. Any other school might see that as a problem, says principal Catherine Ure as one of the custodial staff pushes his cleaning cart by one recent afternoon. But there's an understanding at Fraser Mustard, where all 700 students are kindergartners: every corner is a place for play and learning.

Daycare for new Canadians could be shuttered because of no funding

An Edmonton child-care centre created for newcomers to Canada may be forced to close its doors if it can't find long-term funding. The Intercultural Child and Family Centre opened five years ago just north of downtown, at 9538 107th Ave. It's now home to 44 children spread over three rooms in the former McCauley School.

'Panorama' vaccine-tracker has major gaps in information

More than a dozen full-time staff at Toronto Public Health are chasing thousands of patient records after it was discovered a province-wide vaccination-tracking system has major gaps in information, CTV News has learned. Called the "Panorama," the $165 million computer system was expected to be rolled out by 2011. The system, however, hasn't been fully implemented and kinks in the network are still being worked out.

Dawson City, YT, needs new daycare to keep up with demand

In the winter, Dawson City's Little Blue Daycare is hard to keep warm. In the spring, the roof leaks, and water drips through light fixtures in the ceiling. The Dawson Society for Children and Families has operated the daycare out of the same gold rush-era building since 1979.

Grant awarded to La Salle, MB, daycare

The journey to opening a daycare centre in La Salle, MB, is one step closer to completion thanks to a recently announced provincial grant of $299,000. The LSCU Complex board and La Salle KIDZ have been working to get the money together to pay for extensive renovations to the front section of the former La Salle Community Centre.

Warning for children who suffer severe allergic reaction involving anaphylaxis

A new study suggests about 15 per cent of children who have a severe allergic reaction that involves anaphylaxis can actually have a second reaction hours after the first. It warns that doctors and parents should be on the lookout for this type of two-stage or biphasic anaphylactic reaction.
