University of Saskatchewan childcare centre on budget and schedule

Construction on a 90 space childcare centre at the University of Saskatchewan is on schedule. Vice-Provost of Teaching and Learning Patti McDougall says all services will be hooked up to the site just south of the R.J. Williams Building, and most of the wood framing is completed.

Newfoundland and Labrador government launches online childcare directory

The provincial government launched a new website that lists all regulated childcare services in Newfoundland and Labrador as well as information on violation orders. Premier Paul Davis launched the searchable database, called the Early Learning and Child Care Directory, at a news conference in Conception Bay South.

More kids should get whooping cough vaccine

Back to school means back to communing with many germ-carrying little people. That's why the province's chief medical health officer Dr. Saqib Shahab has a reminder for Saskatchewan families. "As you go back to school, it's really good to make sure all your children are up to date on their vaccines," said Shahab. "Not just children going back to school, but also children going to kindergarten, daycare."

Needs assessment to determine Peterborough, ON's priorities for Healthy Kids Community Challenge

Peterborough, ON, will have $825,000 at its disposal to help encourage healthy lifestyle choices amongst area children and their families. The funding will be doled out by the Ministry of Health and Long-Term Care over the next three years as part of the Healthy Kids Community Challenge. Early diagnosis of ADHD shows progress on its treatment

Even though 53 per cent of children with the disorder are diagnosed by primary care physicians, the research showed that children diagnosed after turning six were more likely to have been diagnosed by a psychologist than their doctor. Nearly two-thirds of children, 64.7 per cent, were diagnosed after a family member raised concerns about behavior, while concerns about 30.1 per cent were first raised by a school or daycare employee.

The data shows that today's "generation squeeze" is working at contract jobs, paying off student loans, trying to balance the budget while carrying huge mortgages, sky-high rent or condo costs — and child care fees are more pricey than university tuition. And it's no longer the case as it was in the 1970s that a modestly paid job could keep a family with only one working parent (usually the father) above the poverty line.
