University of Manitoba to apply for provincial childcare grant

The University of Manitoba recently announced that it will be applying to the province for a grant of up to $600,000 to fund the construction of a new 74-space day care centre on the Fort Garry campus. The announcement follows a report commissioned by the university's childcare working group, which recommended that the university develop new child care centres as satellites of the Fort Garry Campus Day Care Centre.

Innovative outdoor program comes to Winnipeg daycare

A new program at a Winnipeg daycare is taking preschool aged kids into the great outdoors in hopes connecting with nature will foster a life-long appreciation for the environment. Field and Forrest Nature School is a nature-based education program started in Europe that has been growing in popularity in North America for the last decade, and Discovery Children's Centre says it's the first in Manitoba to offer it.

Grand opening held for new University of Regina daycare

The University of Regina has held a grand opening for its new daycare centre. The Awasis Child Care Centre is located in the new Kisik residential towers. It is licensed to accommodate 90 children.

Non-profit reopening College of New Caledonia daycare in Prince George, B.C.

A new non-profit is taking charge of the daycare previously run, then cut, by the College of New Caledonia. The Caledonia Early Care and Learning Centre Society is hosting an open house tonight to show the public the space. Visitors can expect a tour of the facility, information about the daycare program, refreshments and activities for children.

YMCA daycare a highlight of Parkway Forest Community Centre

Daycare a big opportunity for school

Construction is expected to begin on a new North End (Winnipeg) childcare facility in early 2016. Family services minister Kerri Irvin-Ross and education minister James Allum announced a new childcare centre will be built at King Edward Community School, located at the corner of Selkirk Avenue and Arlington Street in the Burrows Central neighbourhood.

Nearsightedness in children cut by spending more time outside

For primary school children in China, spending an extra 45 minutes per day outside in a school activity class may reduce the risk of nearsightedness, or "myopia," according to a new study. In some parts of China, 90 per cent of high school graduates have nearsightedness, and rates are lower but increasing in Europe and the Middle East, the authors write.
