What's the new normal in ag equipment sales?

We certainly are in the midst of a challenging time for ag equipment sales. In certain sectors, we hear of declines of 10, 15, 20, and even 25 per cent from last year's sales. And in other sectors, especially those serving the livestock and dairy industry, I hear comments about record sales.

Here come the farm robots

Phil Jennings of Kinze Manufacturing gets a big kick out of riding in their modified tractor when it's hauling one of their grain carts during a real Iowa harvest. When the call goes out for the cart, the tractor starts chugging across the field to where the combine is working. Jennings just sits there and doesn't even set a hand on the steering wheel.

AGCO: North American farm machinery sales down 27 per cent in 1Q

The softening market for farm machinery is beginning to reveal itself in manufacturers' financial reports. At AGCO, which released its first quarter earnings figures recently, business is down 27 per cent year-over-year, with net sales of $1.7 billion for 2015's first quarter.

New international planter standard designed to minimize 'fugitive dust'

A new planter standard provides ag equipment manufacturers with performance guidelines intended to minimize the drift potential of fugitive dust from seed treated with insecticide. European farmers have been buying telehandlers in pretty large numbers for decades, but here in North America, on-farm materials handling has been pretty much the domain of the ag tractor equipped with a front-end loader. Telehandler sales numbers here have been relatively small — so far.
