Number of big Canadian dealers grows over past years

Ag Equipment Intelligence has produced a "Big Dealer" Report each spring since 2011 examining the biggest dealers — those with five or more locations — in North America. Pulling out just the Canadian dealerships from the 2011 list of big dealers and comparing the numbers with the list of Canadian dealerships in the most recent report from this spring, it's readily apparent that farm equipment dealerships in Canada of all colours are getting bigger.

Used farm equipment sales perk up

To put it mildly, sales of new farm equipment were terrible — even worrisome — in January and February, based on numbers tallied by the Association of Equipment Manufacturers (AEM). But the grim picture painted by those early-year sales reports may not have told the whole story, according to Jim Wood, vice-president, agriculture, at Rocky Mountain Equipment, Canada's largest CNH equipment retailer.

Drop in ag equipment sales hits John Deere earnings

The company earned $6.84 billion during the quarter, compared to analyst estimates of $7.17 billion. Deere & Co reported that third-quarter profit tumbled 40 per cent on weak demand for agricultural equipment, overall lower shipment volumes and a stronger dollar, and gave a bleaker forecast for fourth-quarter sales.

Production of CX-6 SMART Seeder begins

A new seeder design that first caught farmers' attention in Western Canada several years ago is moving from the prototype stage into production. Vancouver-based Clean Seed Capital Group says it has started manufacturing and assembling its CX-6 SMART Seeder at WS Steel Manufacturing in Steinbach, MB.

The show runs just west of Gunnedah, about 400 km north of Sydney, in New South Wales. Organizers estimate the show, organized by Rural Press Events and sponsored by Commonwealth Bank, brings out over 100,000 attendees per year to chat with representatives from about 3,000 individual companies.
