Salford acquires U.S. spreader manufacturer BBI

Ontario-based tillage equipment manufacturer Salford Group, Inc. has acquired a Georgia, U.S.-based company that makes spreaders for the agriculture, poultry, turf and construction industries. The deal to buy BBI Spreaders closed on Oct. 2. Financial terms of the transaction were not disclosed. BBI’s spreaders are designed for broadcast application of granular fertilizers, lime, chicken litter, compost, sand, salt and other granular materials.

JCB’s all-new Fastrac is finally here. It’s good, but is it good enough to grab sales from other marques? Nick Fone finds out. With its deeply furrowed brow and waspish colour-scheme, the Fastrac 4000 has the appearance of an angry character from a Pixar animated feature film. But below the skin things have really moved on with a new Sisu engine, Fendt transmission and advanced suspension system. It’s difficult to fault.

Claas Xerion tractor's turning cab turns heads

While many Canadians have only recently seen Claas’ Xerion tractor for the first time, Drew Fletcher, Claas’ product manager, tractors, says it’s not a new machine. Claas has been manufacturing Xerion tractors at its headquarters at Harsewinkel, Germany for quite a while. “We’ve had it about 10 years in a full-line manufacturing system.” In the past, Claas has sold a few smaller horsepower units in Western Canada.

New loader, excavator launched by Caterpillar

Caterpillar recently took the wraps off two new pieces of equipment in Clayton, N.C. And the company says agriculture is a key market for both machines. The 903C compact wheel loader can handle a variety of jobs, such as hauling fertilizer, hay or seed, and the loader has both buckets and forks.

Landquip shows updated trailed sprayers

Suffolk firm Landquip of InTrac has launched two steering-axle trailed sprayers in 5,200- and 6,000-litre capacities. Chassis, tank and boom are all new, says the company, and air suspension keeps the unit stable and smooth-riding on rough ground. 50kph commercial steering axles are an option and hydraulic and air brakes are on offer.

Precision manure application with NIR technology

That is according to John Deere, which is developing a manure sensing system based on a NIR sensor mounted on a slurry tanker to achieve precise control of application rates. Developed in conjunction with Kotte Lantechnik, Fliegl Agartechnik and Vervaet BV, the Harvestlab sensor used is the same technology used on John Deere forage harvesters for on-the-move analysis of a range of crop constituents including sugars, starch, protein and crude fibre content.

Total stations can take snapshots of worksites and survey layouts. Now Topcon has added a video functionality to its line of direct aiming total stations. The DS-200i provides real time, touch screen video and photo imaging to captured and measured positions. The video allows for non-prism measurements to be aimed and measured to remote objects. This saves time by eliminating the need to return to the tripod while still allowing a remote user to know exactly what he is measuring.
