Redhead Equipment expands presence in northeast Saskatchewan

Redhead Equipment, one of Saskatchewan’s largest equipment dealers, has continued its investment in the province with the recent acquisition of Moker & Thompson, a Case IH dealer with two locations in Northeast Saskatchewan. This deal gives Redhead Equipment seven provincial locations: Estevan, Lloydminster, Melfort, Prince Albert, Regina, Saskatoon and Swift Current. All locations are Case IH dealers, with the exception of the Regina branch.

Ag Growth to buy bin maker Westeel for $221.5 million
AgCanada
Grain bin manufacturer Westeel is on deck to become part of Prairie grain handling equipment company Ag Growth International’s bin of manufacturers. Winnipeg-based AGI announced that it’s signed an acquisition deal with Westeel’s owner Vicwest Inc. and Irish building materials manufacturer Kingspan Group. Kingspan said it will buy Winnipeg-based Vicwest for $12.70 cash per share, pegging the enterprise value of Vicwest at about $350 million.

Komatsu launches semi-automatic PC210LCi-10 excavator; cuts production time 63 per cent
Equipment World
We’re used to numbers when manufacturers talk about fuel efficiency gains in new equipment. But Komatsu America talked about a huge number, and it wasn’t about fuel efficiency, but rather production time. Komatsu says the semi-automatic Intelligent Machine Control on its PC210LCi-10 excavator will help make over-excavation a thing of the past. Compared with using a standard excavator, the company says in field tests the excavator showed up to a 63 per cent reduction in production times.

Hardi’s new Alu Force aluminum booms are just half the weight of their equivalent size steel counterparts. They’re available in two models: TR5 (available in 120 and 132 feet) and TR4 (available in 90-foot standard or 90-/60-foot dualfold). Sumo launches prototype direct drill

Yorkshire cultivator and drill maker Sumo showed several prototype machines at its open day last week, including a direct drill, heayv-duty subsoiler with discs, front-mounted fertilizer hopper, 1,200-litre liquid fertilizer front tank and front-mounted strake. Its DD direct drill has a 3,600-litre hopper with seeding elements at the back and the ability to fold horizontally for transport. The hopper is a 50:50 split unit and grain and fertilizer are metered using the Orga system.

The 2014 Develop with Deere conference brings together dealers, independent agricultural software application developers and John Deere staff primarily from their Intelligent Solutions Group. Kicking things off was a keynote presentation by Pat Pinkston, Vice President, Technology and Information Solutions, Agriculture and Turf Division.

How engineers invented the rubber-belted ag tractor

In the late 1970s, Caterpillar had been selling a limited number of SA (Special Application) crawlers to farmers. But the high-horsepower, articulated, four-wheel drive ag tractors that were pouring onto the market were eating into demand for those machines. For that and other reasons Caterpillar executives eventually decided to develop and market their own four-wheel drive ag tractor.
