Robotic milkers, so why not robotic herders?

Researchers at the University of Sydney in Australia have developed a robotic herder which they say does a better job than humans or dogs. A four-wheeled device nicknamed Robotic Rover has successfully herded dairy cows in tests on the university's dairy herd. "Removing human judgment from trafficking speed will allow us to ensure that cows are only ever herded at a pace that is comfortable, even for the slowest cows," a background document on the Robotic Rover says.

N.Y. investors buy Ontario tillage firm Salford

Grown worldwide from its roots as a cultivator maker in southwestern Ontario, Salford Farm Machinery has now attracted Manhattan money. New York private equity firm GenNx360 Capital Partners, which bills itself as a backer of "middle-market industrial business-to-business" companies, announced that it's bought control of Salford for an undisclosed sum. Salford said its manufacture of primary tillage, secondary tillage, seeding and fertilizing equipment will continue "uninterrupted" from its existing base at Salford, ON, with its "entire workforce remaining in place."

According to the Global Alliance for Agriculture Equipment Manufacturing Assns., ag machinery makers continue to express a high level of confidence in their prospects for increasing their ag machinery business. Results of the latest Agritech Business Barometer Survey show that, in general, the perspectives on the agricultural machinery markets remain positive. Sales went up during the past 3 months in most markets compared to a rather flat development during the first half of this year.

John Deere has launched a new product for testing grain moisture on the go. Whether it's used during harvest or after the crop is in storage, the hand-held GT-3000 Grain Moisture Tester can monitor the moisture and weight of 20 different types of grain. The device is easy to carry around, and it can also measure the temperature of grain in storage from 40 to 120 degrees F.

Bobcat launches its first Tier 4 Final loaders

Bobcat has launched its first Tier 4 Final compact track loaders and skid steers. The engines of the seven new 500 frame-size machines do not require a diesel particulate filter (DPF) and boast sizable increases in torque. The S510, S550 and T550 are radius lift path loaders while the S530, S570, S590 and T590 have a vertical lift path design. Bobcat's Tier 4 solution involved designing an engine with a combustion chamber that significantly reduces the amounts of particulate matter created during combustion.

Canadian air drill vs. German planter

In an informal trial in southern Alberta, canola fields seeded through an air drill and canola fields seeded through a corn planter had equal yields of 40 bushels per acre. However, canola grower Stephen Petluk says yield is not the most important factor in the equation. Canola growers who seed with a corn planter say it isn't necessarily just about yield.

Merlo shows first hybrid telehandler

The arguments about how much longer fossil fuels will last are rumbling on but Merlo has already been working on a contingency plan. The Italian maker has developed a hybrid machine that uses a combination of lithium ion batteries, an electric motor and a smaller-than-usual 76hp engine to provide electric power for up to four hours in eco mode — a combination of electric and diesel — or two hours when powered solely by electricity.
