CIFST partners with IFT to support the Certified Food Scientist Program

The Canadian Institute of Food Science and Technology (CIFST) has announced a new partnership with the Institute of Food Technologists (IFT) that brings the Certified Food Scientist (CFS) certification to CIFST members. This partnership will expand the impact of the CFS program by providing 1,200 CIFST members involved in food science and technology with a new opportunity to differentiate their work experience in the global marketplace.

Supported and inaugurated by Quebec's Research and Development Institute for the Agri-Environment (IRDA) and located on a 90-ha piece of land, the Organic Agriculture Innovation Platform (OAIP) is said to be the biggest organic agriculture research site in Canada.

When Andrew Campbell wanted to check out how well wheat planted on his family's farm last fall was coming out of dormancy this spring, the southwestern Ontario farmer turned to a tiny high-tech tool to help track the crop's progress — his phone. As a tech-savvy young farmer, the 27-year-old Campbell has eagerly embraced smartphone technology. He sees it having great potential to help Canadian farmers, and ultimately to produce food more safely and efficiently for Canadian consumers.

Kantar: Maggi is the world's top food brand

Consumption of snacking and impulse foods in Brazil, Russia, India and China (BRIC region) was worth almost $150 billion for 2012, according to data from Canadean. Products include baked snacks, cereal bars, energy bars, biscuits, cookies, yoghurts, dairy puddings, confectionery and ice cream.

Whole Foods increases earnings forecast

U.S. retailer Whole Foods Market has upped its forecast for full-year earnings after reporting a 22 per cent rise in half-year profits. Whole Foods said that it now sees its annual earnings per share hitting $2.86-2.89, up from an earlier forecast of $2.83-2.87. Sales increased 14 per cent to $6.9 billion. Comparable-store sales were up 7.1 per cent. Identical-store sales, excluding four relocations and three expansions, increased 6.8 per cent.

Analyst: 'Kellogg can't afford to be less competitive in cereals'

As Kellogg posted a profit drop of 11 per cent for its first quarter (Q1) of 2013, company CEO John A. Bryant said it would inject efforts into the adult cereal category to drive growth.
