Could self-fertilizing canola be coming soon?

A crop like canola might soon have the ability to provide much of its own nitrogen fertilizer, says an oilseed specialist with Alberta Agriculture. Legume crops, such as soybeans, peas and alfalfa, already have symbiotic relationships with soil bacteria that allow them to convert atmospheric nitrogen into a form of the nutrient that's usable by the plants.

Alzheimer's: A novel early detection test uses peanut butter

At present, some 5.4 million Americans have Alzheimer's disease, according to the Alzheimer's Association's 2011 Alzheimer's Disease Facts and Figures. The pilot study tested the smell of 24 patients diagnosed with mild cognitive impairment. To perform the test, the patient was asked to close their eyes and mouth, and hold one nostril closed while breathing normally through the other.

Ontario passes local food legislation

Recently, the Local Food Act passed a final vote at Queen's Park. The new legislation is part of a strategy to build Ontario's economy by making more local food available in markets, schools, cafeterias, grocery stores and restaurants. The government says the legislation will create jobs and expand the province's already growing agri-food sector. The legislation is the first of its kind in Canada.

UNBC launching study into changing role of agriculture land use

'Arctic apple' genetically engineered In B.C. prompts protest

Groups against genetically engineered apples that don't brown say they're staging a series of events in British Columbia and Alberta to raise awareness about the product being hailed as a scientific breakthrough. The Society for a GE-Free BC and the Canadian Biotechnology Action Network say the United States is one step closer to approving the genetically modified apple after a call for public comment on a draft environmental assessment for the product.

Loblaw, Metro margins squeezed in grocery wars

Loblaw Companies no longer expects to grow its profit this year and says it will be flat compared with 2012, the result of reduced margins as the grocery company focuses on winning over customers in an intensely competitive marketplace. FDA moves to ban trans fats from processed food

The Food and Drug Administration has proposed banning artificial trans fats in processed food ranging from cookies to frozen pizza, citing the risk of heart disease. Partly hydrogenated oils, which are the primary dietary source of the fats, have been shown to raise "bad" cholesterol. Reducing the use of trans fats could prevent 20,000 heart attacks and 7,000 deaths from heart disease a year, the FDA said.

University of Guelph unveils 3 innovations in food science

The University of Guelph unveiled three new food innovations patented by three of its own food science experts. The GuelphMercury.com reports that representatives from the university and the Ontario Food Cluster introduced the innovations at Anuga, the food trade show that took place in Germany in early October. A university spokesperson said that the university is aiming to be more proactive when it comes to finding solutions to various food processing dilemmas.

U.S. egg production study reveals vast reduction in environmental impact

The Egg Industry Center has released a landmark study that shows that while the U.S. egg production has increased over the past 50 years, the industry has also been able to significantly decrease its environmental footprint. Researchers conducted a life cycle analysis of U.S. egg production from 1960 to 2010 to evaluate environmental performance measures for the complete life cycle from crops to hens to the farm gate.

Unilever and Ferrero palm oil pledges show 'an industry in transformation'

Unilever and Ferrero both said they would strengthen their commitments to sustainable palm oil — a sign of an industry in transformation, according to Catapult, an organisation working to end trade in commodities linked to deforestation. Unilever, which buys about 3 per cent of the world's total palm oil supply, has said it will source 100 per cent fully traceable palm oil by the end of next year, a step toward its goal to source only certified sustainable and fully traceable palm oil by 2020.
