Moody's Investors Service has downgraded its outlook for the North American rail industry to "negative" from "stable," as railroads face deep and long-lasting declines in freight volumes, the firm announced.
The weak industry conditions will likely continue through at least the third quarter, according to a Moody's press release.

Canada's two major railways are slashing expenses and eyeing more layoffs amid a slump in freight made worse by the fires in Northern Alberta.
Canadian National Railway Co. has laid off 1,200 people from its staff of about 23,000 and parked 400 locomotives or 20 per cent of its fleet. Jean-Jacques Ruest, CN's marketing chief, said there are "probably more layoffs" to come.

The city of Lac-Megantic, Quebec, is studying the feasibility of constructing a new rail bypass that would allow freight trains to avoid traveling through the city's downtown area, which was the site of a devastating oil train disaster that killed 47 people three years ago.
City officials called on the public to comment on this first phase of the feasibility study, which has been underway for about nine months.

Trailer orders increased in the month of April, gaining 15 percent over the previous month thanks to the dry van and refrigerated trailer markets, according to the latest numbers from FTR and ACT Research.
Total trailer orders for the month hit 15,800 units, which is down 12 percent compared with last April, according to FTR. ACT Research released a preliminary estimate of 17,200 trailer orders using different metrics, but the percentage gain month-to-month was similar. For the past 12 months, there have been 289,000 units and backlogs are now down 7 percent year-over-year.

The Truck Training Schools Association of Ontario (TTSAO) said that it believes great strides have been achieved with the recently proposed Mandatory Entry Level Training standards, but that the standard still needs work before it can fully endorse them.
The TTSAO, and other industry subject matter experts from various carriers, training institutions and insurance fields were on the task force to provide their input and feedback on the standards.

The American Transportation Research Institute (ATRI) announced that is participating in a new trucking industry initiative to help commercial drivers find available truck parking.
Beginning later this summer, truck drivers who need to stop and park his/her rig can use a mobile app called Park My Truck to find available parking spaces. The app is being developed by the Truck Parking Leadership Initiative, of which ATRI is a key member along with the NATSO Foundation, and the American Trucking Associations.

Hapag-Lloyd AG, Germany's top container shipping line, will join five Asian carriers to
create a new vessel-sharing alliance to help combat a chronic glut in capacity that has kept freight rates low.
Called simply "The Alliance," other partners will include Japan's Kawasaki Kisen Kaisha, Mitsui OSK Lines, Nippon Yusen KK, South Korea's Hanjin Shipping and Taiwan's Yang Ming Marine, according to a Hapag-Lloyd statement.
