The pro-NAFTA forces in Washington, D.C., are escalating efforts to protect the agreement from President Donald Trump, including entertaining the idea of shielding it via some legislative mechanism.
The U.S. Chamber of Commerce announced it will hold weekly events to rally support for the deal, as the country's largest business lobby held an initial such gathering Tuesday at its headquarters across the street from the White House.

Total intermodal volumes rose 6.3 percent in third-quarter 2017 compared with the same period a year ago, marking the strongest growth rate in three years, the Intermodal Association of North America (IANA) reported recently.
During the quarter, international volume climbed 8.2 percent, the domestic container market increased 3.8 percent and trailer loads posted the strongest growth number at 8.4 percent compared with third-quarter 2016, according to IANA's "Intermodal Market Trends & Statistics" report.

Canadian National Railway Co. has forged a train-swap agreement with U.S. rail carrier Norfolk Southern Corp. that skirts the congested hub of Chicago.
The deal cuts transit time between CN territory in Western Canada and Norfolk Southern terminals in cities in the Eastern United States by one or two days, the railroads said in a statement announcing the partnership.

Sanborn; Executive Vice President and Chief Sales and Marketing Officer Fredrik J. Eliasson; and Executive Vice President Law and Public Affairs, General Counsel and Corporate Secretary Ellen M. Fitzsimmons. Sanborn and Eliasson are resigning "to pursue other interests." Fitzsimmons is retiring. All "will remain engaged in supporting the transition until early 2018," CSX said.

Driver fuel efficiency and safety training is only effective if it includes refresher courses, according to results from a recent PIT Group study on driver training.
The study found that in-vehicle technologies can reinforce good practices and address weaknesses of drivers, ideally in real time.
"While vehicle technology designed to improve fuel economy continues to advance, driver training is the element that has the largest impact on fuel consumption," said Yves Provencher director, market and business development at PIT Group.

The Alliance for Driver Safety & Security (aka the Trucking Alliance) announced that in order to qualify for membership, carriers must adopt four truck-safety technologies that the AAA Foundation for Traffic Safety has concluded are critical to reducing large truck crashes and saving lives.
The Trucking Alliance noted that a new AAA Foundation report, "Leveraging Large Truck Technology and Engineering to Realize Safety Gains," examined the costs and safety benefits of installing these four advanced safety technologies in large trucks.

After several high-profile commercial vehicle collisions, the Ontario Trucking Association (OTA) says the key to commercial vehicle safety is improving on the human element of truck safety performance:
According to the Ontario Ministry of Transportation, mechanical fitness is a factor in less than 2 percent of fatal collisions involving trucks. When examining those same collisions, the driver of the truck was shown to be driving properly 70 percent of the time.

Airfreight's peak season is finally being reflected in freight rates for East-West routes. After remaining surprisingly flat through August, airfreight rates rose to their highest average rate since January with a seasonal boost, climbing to US$2.68 for September, according to Drewry's East-West Airfreight Price Index.
This brings airfreight rates to about where they were last September, when they stood only a penny higher, at US$2.69.

Air Canada posted record third-quarter financial results, powered by a record number of passengers and as well as a 38 per cent increase year on year in cargo-related revenue.
Profit hit $1.79-billion in the quarter or $6.44 a share, up from $768-million or $2.74 a year earlier, helped in part by a $793-million income tax recovery.
Air Canada made C$1.4bn in EBITDAR (earnings before interest, taxes, depreciation, amortisation, impairment and aircraft rent) in the third quarter of 2017, a record figure.

Recent mergers and the formation of mega-alliances will benefit a container shipping industry that suffered a collective operating loss of $3.5 billion last year. But, according to UNCTAD's Review of Maritime Transport 2017, consolidation also poses a threat to competition.
"Increased consolidation among carriers could bring some order to a market in need of better supply management and improved efficiency, and the pooling of cargo could improve economies of scale and reduce operating costs," said the report.

Gov. Nathan Deal said that Washington needs to "step up" with more money to deepen the shipping channel to the Port of Savannah, where larger ships arriving through an expanded Panama Canal have pushed cargo volumes to record highs.
