Today, the Honourable Marc Garneau, Minister of Transport, announced that the Government of Canada will begin a call for proposals under the National Trade Corridors Fund on January 15, 2019. The government will begin accepting expressions of interest starting on that date.

The idea of the North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA) was very controversial when first proposed during the Clinton administration and signed in 1994. It was the first North American trilateral trade bloc representing Mexico, Canada and the United States. NAFTA’s successor, called the United States-Mexico-Canada Agreement (USMCA), was signed by all three participating countries’ leaders at the G20 Summit on Nov. 30. The legislatures of all three countries must ratify the agreement before it goes into effect. We know USMCA is intended to make up for NAFTA’s shortcomings. But will it?

U.S. railroads reported a 3.9 percent increase in carloads and intermodal units for the week ending Dec. 15 compared with traffic levels reported for same week in 2017, according to Association of American Railroads (AAR) data.
U.S. railroads transported 267,534 carloads, up 1.4 percent, and 301,407 intermodal containers and trailers, up 6.2 percent year over year.

Canadian National Railway and the union that represents its 2,100 mechanics, electricians and apprentices in Canada say they have reached a tentative collective agreement.
No details of the deal are being released until it is presented to members in ratification meetings.
Negotiations began Oct. 5 with Unifor saying that wages, benefits and the contracting out of repair and overhaul work were key issues.

Western grain shippers are watching closely to ensure their rail service doesn't decline as oil shipments increase. "We would be concerned if either railway were to reduce grain capacity in favour of crude oil," Wade Sobkowich, executive director of the Western Grain Elevator Association said in an interview Dec. 5.

G3 Canada Ltd. yesterday announced plans to build a grain elevator near Morinville, Alberta.
To be served by CN, the 42,000-ton capacity elevator is designed to load 150-car trains under continuous motion on a loop track. The facility also will be capable of unloading trucks in less than five minutes, G3 Canada officials said in a press release.

The Canadian Trucking Alliance is continuing to push electronic logging device (ELD) enforcement across Canada by early 2020 after the Alliance assembled a group of suppliers and technical experts to provide the government with a roadmap on third party-certification.
CTA adds it is also encouraged following last week's announcement by the Prime Minister and the Council of First Ministers to prioritize ELDs.

Amazon plans a new fulfillment centre in Leduc County, creating more than 600 full-time jobs by 2020.
The one-million-square-foot customer fulfillment facility will be Amazon's second in Alberta, where it currently employs more than 1,500 full-time associates in Rocky View County.
Once open, the new facility will be Amazon's 11th fulfillment facility in Canada and joins Amazon's current fulfillment centres in Alberta, British Columbia and Ontario.

UK airlines will not be able to add any new routes to European Union countries under contingency plans tabled by the European Commission in the event of a no-deal Brexit.
While most have welcomed the publication of the contingency plans, Airports Council International (ACI) Europe noted that the regulation made it clear that UK airlines will not be allowed to add new routes nor increase frequencies on currently operated routes for 12 months starting from when the UK leaves the European Union.

The Port of Prince Rupert, DP World and CN marked the 1 millionth container handled by the Fairview Container Terminal in a calendar year.
The millionth unit — a 40-foot container — was loaded onto the COSCO Africa ocean liner. The container was loaded with dimensional lumber from Canfor's Plateau mill at CN's Prince George transload facility before arriving in Prince Rupert by rail.

Scrubber retrofits ahead of the 2020 sulphur cap could give freight rates a temporary boost by restricting capacity next year, according to Drewry.
The London-based analyst firm says that although containerships fitted with exhaust scrubbing technology will be in the minority, numbers are on the rise. This is despite the technology coming under fire, particularly so-called open loop scrubbers, which have been banned in some regions, including in Singapore.

The British Columbia's Port of Prince Rupert and DP World have marked a historic milestone as Fairview Container Terminal handled its millionth container (TEU) for the first time in a calendar year.
The 40-foot TEU was loaded with dimensional lumber in Prince George before being shipped to Prince Rupert by train and loaded onto the COSCO Africa container ship to be sent to market.
