Advance for Medical Laboratory Professionals    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article

So who is that man in the corner telling you that those things are not allowed? Is that Scrooge saying "Bah humbug" to all of these ideas? More

Goals: The difference between success and failure
Fast Company    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
What do you think is the single most significant factor in determining the ultimate success or failure of your business? It's not how hard you work, how well you train your employees or even how strong your cash flow is. Those are all critical factors, but even more important is your approach (or lack thereof) to goal setting. Psychologists believe, and studies have documented, that individuals with clear, written goals are significantly more likely to succeed than those without clearly defined goals. More

More physician use of EHRs could increase medical malpractice claims
Dark Daily    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
Some experts predict that the great expansion in the number of physicians using electronic health record systems may trigger an increase in medical malpractice lawsuits. Were this were to happen, clinical laboratories and pathology group practices might find themselves also named in such lawsuits because they provided the medical laboratory test results that populated the patient's EHR. Concern about an increase in medical malpractice claims surfaced in response to the speed at which the federal government is pushing physicians to implement and use electronic health record systems as required under the 2009 American Recovery and Reinvestment Act. For example, federal officials are directing hospitals to implement EHRs that fulfill the Act's Meaningful Use requirements by 2012. More

The myth of work-life balance
Harvard Business Review    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
Many companies extol the value of work-life balance for their employees, but the reality for senior executives? There isn't any. Frequently, stressed and harried managers look up the organization hierarchy and assume that they'll have greater control of their time when they advance to the C-suite. What they don't understand is that modern-day telecommunications, the hair-trigger requirements of financial markets and the pace of global organizations create 24/7 work lives for most executives. So, forget work-life balance and think personal organization and finding ways to relax. More

The only ethics guide you'll ever need
Inc.    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
Peter Drucker, the late management guru, said: "As to 'ethical problems' in business, I have made myself tremendously unpopular by saying, again and again, that there is no such thing as 'business ethics.' There is only ethics." You can solve most ethical dilemmas by running down this checklist. It's pretty simple: If the action in question fails any one of these tests, just don't do it. More

Laboratory waste management
Advance for Administrators of the Laboratory    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
Laboratory waste is segregated at the point of use into categories that include but are not limited to: infectious/biohazard waste, needles/sharps, chemical waste, recycled waste and regular trash. Each category has its special approach to disposal. Laboratory waste must be managed according to national, regional, and local regulations. Regardless of the type of waste, it should be removed on a regular basis. Chemical waste must be handled according to the manufacturer's requirements on the Material Safety Data Sheet. Hazardous chemical disposal is regulated through regional and local governmental agencies. More

84 percent of workers looking to leave their jobs
MoneyWatch    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
Is it really that bad? A new survey by Right Management, the consulting arm of staffing group Manpower, finds that a whopping 84 percent of employees are planning on searching for a new job in 2012. That compares to 60 percent of the respondents in a similar survey by Right Management conducted two years ago. The company surveyed more than 1,000 people in the U.S. and Canada. Only five percent of survey respondents said they were planning to stay in their current job. Bram Lowsky, a senior vice president at Right Management, says intent to leave is the workplace equivalent of asking if the country is heading in the right direction. In essence, employees are saying the workplace is headed in the wrong direction — very wrong. More
