An initial version of Clearing the Way, a documentary capturing the story of combat engineers from 23 Field Squadron, was screened to an audience of United Nations members, Canadians, and military members recently at the Canadian Embassy in Haiti.
It was an important milestone not only for the producers of the film but for Col. Mark Gasparotto, editor of the book, titled the same, that served as the inspiration for the documentary.
"I found it quite poignant. It took me back to Kandahar in 2006, to when we were all together. When I first saw it it was quite emotional for me," said Gasparotto on seeing the documentary for the first time.

A group that helps military veterans find jobs in the private sector says many former soldiers are struggling to find meaningful employment after serving their country.
"There isn't necessarily a larger population of veterans that are unemployed. The challenge to transition successfully into a job is more difficult," said Angela Mondou, president of Canada Company, a charitable organization that connects businesses with the Canadian military.

The Veterans Affairs audit was looking at a program that helps pay the costs of burying veterans who died because of their military service or whose survivors can't afford a proper funeral.
Since 2013, the government has helped pay for around 1,200 such funerals each year at a cost of around $7 million.

An audit by Veterans Affairs has found tens of thousands of veterans' graves in cemeteries across the country are in a state of disrepair.
The culprit? A lack of federal funding.
Veterans Affairs is responsible for maintaining the graves of more than 200,000 veterans buried by the federal government in Canada. But previous governments slashed the money available for such maintenance from $5 million per year in 2003 to $1.2 million today, which the department's audit says isn't nearly enough.
