2017 marks the 75th Anniversary of Operation JUBILEE, the Second World War Allied raid on Dieppe, France across the English Channel that took place on Aug. 18-19, 1942. There were more Sapper fatalities during this operation than we were to suffer on the D-Day Invasion two years later. Originally conceived as Operation RUTTER in April 1942, the Allies planned to conduct a major division-sized raid on a German-held port on the French Channel coast and to hold it for the duration of at least two tides. The aim was to affect the greatest amount of destruction of enemy facilities and defences before withdrawing. This "reconnaissance in force" action was intended to test the defences of Hitler's continental fortress and the capability of the Western Allies to launch large-scale amphibious assaults against Hitler's "Fortress Europe."

In 1942, British operational command conceived of a combined amphibious, airborne, naval and air force assault on Dieppe, a German-occupied and fortified port on the French coast. The initial plan, Operation RUTTER, planned for a division-sized force to land, cease key facilities, destroy others, gather high-value intelligence, and hold the town for two tides before withdrawing back to England. It would be supported by airborne landings, fighter support and heavy air and sea bombardment.

Representing the spirit of the wounded warriors' spirit that chooses to still burn bright despite its injuries, the Invictus Spirit Flame was lit during a ceremony at the Afghanistan Presidential Palace in Kabul.
"Many Invictus Games competitors served and became ill or injured in Afghanistan. In fact, 14 of the 17 nations participating in the 2017 Invictus Games had service personnel killed or injured there. Afghanistan is now also indelibly woven into the national fabric of Canadian military history. It is fitting that the Invictus Spirit Flame be lit in Kabul," said Michael Burns, CEO, Invictus Games Toronto 2017.

We Are The Mighty
The Royal Army, as well as the armies of some commonwealth nations, has a peculiar rank in its structure that allows the soldier to wear a full beard and apron and carry a large ax while on parade.
Pioneer sergeants, as they are known, date back to the 1700s when the men selected for this duty were expected to act as a unit blacksmith as well as a sort of early combat engineer, cutting the way through forests and other obstacles to allow other troops to move behind them with additional equipment and arms. They also had... other duties.
