The Canadian military is looking for homemade explosives training in the wake of a new report that the number of people killed or injured by landmines across the world reached a 10-year high last year, driven by a spike in improvised devices planted by militant groups like the Islamic State.
"Canadian Armed Forces operations conducted over the past decade and open source reporting have highlighted the growing use of homemade explosives among terrorist and other potential adversary groups," according to a new request for proposals the Department of National Defence issued for the training.

A Canadian Armed Forces "training assessment team" is now in Lebanon, tasked with identifying capacity-building programs Canadian trainers will conduct with the Lebanese armed forces, the Department of National Defence has confirmed.
Canada's Liberal government pledged earlier this year to boost its diplomatic and military presence in Jordan and Lebanon as part of its re-jigged contribution to the U.S.-led coalition fighting the so-called Islamic State.

Okotoks Online
A military detachment is on the way for Okotoks.
King's Own Calgary Regiment is looking to open a detachment in Okotoks in April and will be hiring about 30 recruits.
Currently the unit has about 100 soldiers and they're looking to focus recruiting efforts south of the city in Okotoks and High River by creating a training detachment.
Chris Hunt, commanding officer at King's Own Calgary, says they've already reached out to communities to gage interest.

36 Canadian Brigade Group recently began an evaluation of the Primary Reserve Expedited Enrollment Trial (PREET) for selected Army Reserve units in Nova Scotia, Prince Edward Island and Western Newfoundland, according to the Canadian Forces.The PREET evaluation will run until March 31, 2017 and will use a modified process that aims to have applicants to the Army Reserve enrolled after two scheduled visits to the unit they seek to join, the military noted.

Winnipeg-based Peerless Garments LP, a division of specialty apparel maker Unisync, has been awarded an $18.2 million order for enhanced combat uniforms from Public Works and Government Services Canada.
The contract consists of a firm $6 million for the delivery of 18,000 jackets and 38,760 trousers to the Canadian Forces, and two options for similar quantities having a combined maximum value of $12.2 million set for the third and fourth years of the deal.

Closing out two terms as a president at war, Barack Obama staunchly defended his counterterrorism strategy as one that rejected torture, held to American values and avoided large-scale troop deployments, in an implicit effort to shape the strategy his successor might employ.
Obama came to MacDill Air Force Base, home to U.S. Special Operations Command and Central Command, to give his final speech on national security. He delivered a strident argument for his reliance on drone strikes and U.S. commandos rather than ground wars like those launched in Iraq and Afghanistan by his predecessor.

Russian sappers have recently demined 16.3 hectares of Aleppo's territory, defusing 1,200 explosive devices, the Russian Center for Reconciliation of opposing sides in Syria said in a statement. "The Russian military servicemen of the International Mine Action Center continue to demine the recently liberated quarters of eastern Aleppo. They demined 16.3 hectares of the city territory. Besides that, 48 buildings, including five schools, a residential compound and a home for elderly people, have been cleared of explosive devices, as well as a park and motor roads with a total length of 2.5 kilometers," the statement reads.
