2014 AOA/COA Combined Meeting guest speakers

COA Past Presidents, Dr. Cecil H. Rorabeck and Dr. Cy Frank will be the R.I. Harris Lecturer and Presidential Guest Speaker respectively at the upcoming Combined Meeting of the AOA and COA. We would also like to welcome Mr. Geoff Molson as the Howard Steel Lecturer who will present during the meeting’s Opening Ceremonies on Wednesday, June 18. Guest speaker bios and a meeting program at-a-glance can be found under the Scientific Sessions section of the Menu tab www.aoacoa2014.org. The 2014 Annual Meeting will be held in Montreal from June 18-21. Registration opens next month!

L'ACO
Les Drs Cecil H. Rorabeck et Cy Frank, anciens présidents de l'ACO, seront respectivement conférencier R.I. Harris et conférencier invité par les présidents à la Réunion annuelle conjointe de l'AOA et de l'ACO. Nous tenons également à souligner la présence de M. Geoffrey Molson, qui donnera la Conférence Howard Steel aux cérémonies d'ouverture de la Réunion, le mercredi 18 juin. Congratulations 2014 CFBS fellows
COA
Drs. Alex Soroceanu and Nathan Urquhart have been selected as the COA's 2014 CFBS Travelling Fellows. Dr. Soroceanu is currently completing a spine fellowship at the NYU Hospital for Joint Diseases, while Dr. Urquhart is presently working as an extended-term locum at Dartmouth Regional Hospital and pursing research in hip and shoulder arthroscopy. Both are graduates of the Dalhousie orthopaedic residency program. They will visit various orthopaedic centres in France, Belgium and Switzerland this Fall, and will complete their tour at the SOFCOT meeting in Paris in November. Please join us in congratulating Drs. Soroceanu and Urquhart on this tremendous achievement.

Félicitations aux lauréats de la Bourse de voyage CFBS 2014
L'ACO
La candidature des Drs Alex Soroceanu et Nathan Urquhart a été retenue pour la Bourse de voyage canado-franco-belge-suisse (CFBS) 2014. La Dre Soroceanu effectue actuellement une formation supérieure sur le rachis au NYU Hospital for Joint Diseases, tandis que le Dr Urquhart effectue une suppléance prolongée au Dartmouth Regional Hospital, en plus de poursuivre ses recherches sur l'arthroscopie de la hanche et de l'épaule. Les deux orthopédistes sont diplômés du programme de résidence de l'Université Dalhousie. Dans le cadre de leur tournée automnale, ils visiteront différents centres orthopédiques en France, en Belgique et en Suisse. Cette tournée se terminera au congrès de la SOFCOT, à Paris, en novembre. Veuillez vous joindre à nous pour féliciter les Drs Soroceanu et Urquhart pour cet accomplissement exceptionnel.

Alberta wait times 2013: Healthcare wait times going the wrong direction

Instead of moving closer toward their goal, Alberta Health Services is actually moving farther away from meeting its wait time targets, new numbers show. Research conducted by the Alberta Liberals and released Thursday shows that wait times in six critical categories have actually gotten longer. The figures come months after the province was scheduled to release quarterly updates on the state of health wait times in the province.

Seniors occupy health minister's office over drug care changes

A group of seniors was prepared to stay overnight at the Edmonton constituency office of Health Minister Fred Horne. About two dozen seniors entered the office demanding a meeting with Horne and Premier Alison Redford over a plan to change Pharmacare coverage. They are angry over the government's plan to eliminate universal drug coverage for seniors and replace it with an income-based plan.

Canadian patients wait longest to see family doctors

Canada ranks last among 11 OECD countries in a new survey in terms of how quickly people can get in to see their regular family physicians, showing "where a person lives does matter," says the Health Council of Canada. The finding was published in the council's final bulletin, based on data from the 2013 Commonwealth Fund International Health Policy Survey of the General Public.

An idea floated by a hospital CEO in Windsor is getting some political support in Sudbury. David Musjy says people who use health care should get an itemized bill to show the cost to the health care system. He said that would make people appreciate the care more. But the New Democrat MPP for Sudbury wants to take it a step further.
