Reminder... Resident Scholarship Opportunity — Call for Applications

Do you work with Residents who are demonstrated humanitarians and making a real difference in the lives of others? If so, encourage them to submit an application for the Canadian Orthopaedic Foundation's Bones and Phones Legacy Scholarship. Founded by Dr. Veronica Wadey and Mr. Henry Chow, the deadline to receive applications is March 31, 2015.

• Ensure orthopaedic residents at your institution are made aware of this funding opportunity
• Consider nominating any orthopaedic residents at your institution you feel would be suitable applicants for the scholarship award. (Send their name and contact information to scholarship@canorth.org)

Si c'est le cas, invitez-les à soumettre leur candidature pour une bourse du Fonds de bourses d'études Bones and Phones de la Fondation Canadienne d'Orthopédie, créé par la Dre Veronica Wadey et M. Henry Chow. Les candidatures sont acceptées jusqu'au 31 mars 2015.

High demand for hip replacements leaves B.C. woman waiting 2 years

Hillary Rockvam, 57, has been waiting two years to get a date for her hip replacement surgery — and she wants answers. "If I don't get my surgery soon, I could be on disability, and the government will pay for me to be on disability if I can't work," she told Daybreak Kamloops' Shelley Joyce. "It would be in their best interest to get people like me in and out and back to being productive members of society."

Temps d'attente aux urgences : l'Outaouais fait encore piètre figure

L'Outaouais est la région du Québec qui a connu la plus forte augmentation du temps d'attente sur civière pour la période d'avril à novembre 2014, selon des documents du Ministère de la Santé et des Services sociaux. La durée moyenne de séjour à l'urgence sur civière est ainsi passée à 21 heures 12 minutes, ce qui est une hausse de 3 heures 39 minutes par rapport à la même période correspondante de 2013.

Study: Health-care quality satisfies Canada's seniors

Canadian seniors wait longer to see a doctor or nurse but are generally pleased with the quality of care when they do, compared with their counterparts in 10 industrialized countries, according to a new report. Just over half of survey respondents in Canada, 53 per cent, waited at least two days to see a family doctor or nurse the last time they were sick compared with the international average of 32 per cent.

Ontario health workers strike could cause hospital backlogs

About 3,000 members of the Ontario Nurses' Association walked off the job today in a move that the union says will result in overcrowding at hospitals. Workers at nine Ontario regions are on strike after rejecting contract offers from the following Community Care Access Centres​ (CCACs): North East, North West, Central East, Central, North Simcoe Muskoka, Waterloo Wellington, South East, South West and Erie St. Clair.

Virtual solution to hospital wait times?

It's being called a virtual waiting room and the idea is to treat more people in their own living rooms instead of at a hospital, to cut down on wait times for others. The Winnipeg Fire Paramedic Service is discussing a future expansion to their community paramedic program. There are already special paramedics called "EPIC" paramedics who treat low risk patients in their homes when they call an ambulance but this would take the program a step further by using technology so the patient could be monitored virtually.

Ontario lags other provinces in updating health privacy laws

Ontario lags behind most other jurisdictions when it comes to protecting patient privacy. The Star contacted every health jurisdiction in Canada and found eight have passed legislation — some as recently as last year — to force hospitals to report breaches to the relevant privacy body. But Ontario, which has the largest population in the country, has no plans for such a legislative change. A province that was once a leader in health information privacy laws is now trailing as other provinces move to stricter reporting.

Waiting time pushes Fredericton woman to Colombia for surgery

A Fredericton woman says the province could learn a few lessons in health care from Colombia. Sharon Burke is in the South American country, recovering from k​nee surgery. She decided to get the operation in Medellin after learning it could take up to three years to get surgery in New Brunswick. Burke says her problems started about four years ago after a slight injury to her knee. Doctors treated her injury with cortisone shots and synthetic joint fluid and the pain went away.

Un Service d'injection supervisée, une nécessité

Un centre d'injection supervisée pour toxicomanes devrait être implanté à Québec, conclut un comité de travail chapeauté par le Centre de santé et de services sociaux (CSSS) de la Vieille-Capitale. Selon le rapport du comité dont Radio-Canada a obtenu copie, il est nécessaire qu'un Service d'injection supervisée (SIS) voit le jour à Québec pour venir en aide aux quelque 900 utilisateurs de drogue par injection de la capitale.
