Federal health and safety cuts could put Canadians at risk

Health and safety inspectors who go into federally regulated workplaces say reductions in the number of workers doing the job could put Canadians at risk. Those workplaces include banks, federal government buildings, airlines, ports and First Nations reserves. Bruce McKeigan, a health and safety inspector for Labour Canada who has worked in the industry for decades, said he's concerned about the staff reductions.

Eastern Health project recognized for reducing wait times
The Telegram
A project by Eastern Health to reduce wait times for orthopedic surgery has been recognized as an innovative practice in a national video series launched by the Health Council of Canada. Eastern Health's Orthopedic Central Intake project was launched in 2010 with a goal to develop a central intake process that would refer patients on an urgent basis to the next available surgeon, keep track of the patient’s referral status and involve all health care providers in the patient's case throughout the process.

Programs to curb hospital wait times have had little effect on five key trouble spots, said a physicians group as it issued a report saying "progress has stalled" for Canada's health care system. In their report, Time for Transformation: Canadians still waiting too long for healthcare, Simpson and fellow physicians from the Canadian Medical Association reveal joint replacement, radiation therapy, diagnostic imaging, cataract and heart surgeries have longer waits.
