Ambulance wait times a sign of staff shortage, union says

The union representing Montreal-area paramedics says Urgences-Santé's staffing shortage has resulted in longer wait times. Documents obtained by Radio-Canada indicate that, of 695 emergency calls studied, an ambulance was dispatched within three minutes of a call in 350 cases. But in 128 cases, it took 10 minutes or more to find an ambulance to dispatch. It took more than 30 minutes in 24 cases, and more than an hour in nine.

More hospital beds needed to keep up with aging population

In 10 years, the region will need an additional 170 hospital beds to accommodate the aging and growing population. According to Malcolm Maxwell, president and chief executive officer of Grand River Hospital, who recently presented on behalf of the region's three hospitals to area councillors, the hospitals need to work together to make a plan for the future. That plan needs to include how to accommodate more people.

'Inadequate patient assessment': Canadian doctors missing glaring signs of sepsis

New warnings are being sounded that doctors are missing signs of sepsis, a potentially catastrophic condition that hospitalizes tens of thousands of Canadians a year, killing up to a third of them. A review by the body that defends doctors accused of malpractice identified 327 cases involving sepsis — including 204 deaths — that closed between 2009 and 2013.
