CFBS Fellowship Tour — Call for applicants
COA
COA members are encouraged to apply for the 2014 Canadian-French-Belgian-Swiss (CFBS) fellowship tour before Nov. 1, 2013. Two Canadian fellows are eligible for the 3-week tour that would take place in the fall of 2014. Applicants should have his/her FRCSC in orthopaedic surgery or equivalent qualification, and be less than 40 years of age on Dec. 31, 2013. Bourse de voyage CFBS — Appel de candidatures
L'ACO
On invite les membres de l'ACO à soumettre leur candidature pour la bourse de voyage canado-franco-belge-suisse (CFBS) 2014 avant le 1er novembre 2013. Deux boursiers canadiens participeront à une tournée de trois semaines organisée à l'automne 2014. Les candidats doivent détenir un certificat en chirurgie orthopédique du Collège royal des médecins et chirurgiens du Canada et le titre de FRCSC ou les qualifications équivalentes, en plus d'être âgés de moins de 40 ans au 31 décembre 2013. Congratulations are extended to Dr. Earl Bogoch (Toronto) for being the inaugural recipient of the Merck Canada — Patient First Award. This award celebrates and recognizes individuals whose academic and/or clinical work have had a significant impact on the health of Canadians. Dr. Bogoch was selected in recognition of his leadership in developing and implementing The Exemplary Care Program. The roll-out of this program across Ontario, and versions of it across Canada, is and will undoubtedly improve the care of patients who present with fragility fractures.

He will be presented with the award during a special ceremony on Sept. 12, 2013. Congratulations!

The study 'The Private Cost of Public Queues for Medically Necessary Care' calculated the average value of time lost during the work week at $1,129 for each of the estimated 870,462 patients waiting for surgery last year.

Plus de 50 000 dons sont nécessaires d'ici à la Fête du travail pour répondre à la demande constante des hôpitaux et pour que les stocks de sangs soient suffisants, a fait savoir la société.

Study: Health Canada should regulate hospital pharmacies

Health Canada should regulate all entities that mix drugs outside a licensed pharmacy, an expert that looked into the chemotherapy drug scare that rocked two provinces recommended. It also urged Ontario to bring in stronger rules for licensed pharmacies, by inspecting and licensing those in the province's clinics and hospitals as well as pharmacies that prepare large volumes of drug mixtures.

Why wait for a health care crisis to put patients' safety first?
The Globe and Mail
The latest report from Britain, titled "A promise to learn — a commitment to act," was prepared by a committee led by Dr. Don Berwick, founder of the Institute for Healthcare Improvement. It focuses on how to improve patient safety in Britain's National Health Service (NHS). But it offers much food for thought (and tools for prevention) for health care administrators around the world, including Canada.

Delays in accessing medical care in Canada can be remarkably long. In 2012, for example, the average Canadian could expect to wait more than four months for treatment by a specialist after their general practitioner has referred them. Despite substantial increases in taxpayer-funded health expenditures and numerous governmental initiatives to reduce delays, wait times have improved little over the past decade.
