2016 CFBS Fellowship Tour — call for applicants

COA members are encouraged to apply for the 2016 Canadian-French-Belgian-Swiss (CFBS) fellowship tour before November 1, 2015. Two Canadian fellows are eligible for the 3-week tour that would take place in the fall of 2016. Applicants should have his/her FRCSC in orthopaedic surgery or equivalent qualification, and be less than 40 years of age on December 31, 2015. Bourse de voyage CFBS 2016 — Appel de candidatures

On invite les membres de l'ACO à soumettre leur candidature pour la bourse de voyage canado-franco-belge-suisse (CFBS) 2016 avant le 1er novembre 2015. Deux boursiers canadiens participeront à une tournée de trois semaines organisée à l'automne 2016. Les candidats doivent détenir un certificat en chirurgie orthopédique du Collège royal des médecins et chirurgiens du Canada et le titre de FRCSC ou les qualifications équivalentes, en plus d'être âgés de moins de 40 ans au 31 décembre 2015. The COA Mourns the Loss of Dr. Carroll A. Laurin

The COA is deeply saddened by the loss of esteemed colleague and friend, Dr. Carroll A. Laurin, OC, MDCM., FRCSC, FACS, on July 24, 2015. Dr. Laurin served as the Chief of Orthopaedics at both Université de Montreal and McGill University. His many accomplishments include serving as COA President in 1979, being appointed to the Order of Canada in 1996, winning the COA Award of Excellence in 2008 as well as establishment of the Canadian Orthopaedic Foundation's prestigious Carroll A. Laurin Award recognizing outstanding new research in Canada. He was highly respected by his peers and revered internationally for his subspecialty expertise in sports medicine. Dr. Laurin was the director of medical services for the Montreal Olympic Games in 1976 and has served the editorial boards of multiple publications.

Our sympathies are extended to his wife, Madeleine Loranger, as well as his entire family and many friends. He will be greatly missed by the orthopaedic community. Please CLICK HERE to read the full obituary.

L'ACO pleure le départ du Dr Carroll A. Laurin

L'ACO a été peinée d'apprendre le décès d'un grand collègue et ami, le Dr Carroll A. Laurin, OC, MDCM, FRCSC, FACS, survenu le 24 juillet 2015. Le Dr Laurin a été directeur de la chirurgie orthopédique à l'Université de Montréal et à l'Université McGill. Entre autres réalisations, il a été président de l'ACO en 1979, nommé Officier de l'Ordre du Canada en 1996, et lauréat du Prix d'excellence de l'ACO en 2008, en plus d'être à l'origine de la prestigieuse Bourse Carroll-A.-Laurin de la Fondation Canadienne d'Orthopédie, qui reconnaît de nouveaux projets de recherche exceptionnels menés au Canada. Ses pairs le tenaient en haute estime, et son savoir-faire en médecine sportive était éminemment respecté partout dans le monde. Le Dr Laurin a été directeur des services médicaux pour les Jeux olympiques de Montréal, en 1976, et a fait partie du comité de rédaction de multiples publications.

Nos plus sincères condoléances à sa femme, Madeleine Loranger, à toute sa famille et à ses nombreux amis. Il manquera énormément à la communauté orthopédique. CLIQUEZ ICI pour lire sa notice nécrologique.

50th Anniversary — University of Ottawa Orthopaedics

2016 will be an exciting year for The University of Ottawa's Division of Orthopaedic Surgery as it celebrates 50 years of providing excellent orthopaedic care and education. Dr. Paul Beaulé would like to cordially invite all alumni from May 12-14, 2016 to celebrate this milestone event. The celebration will be multi-faceted with a series of events including the 50th Anniversary Gala Dinner to be held in the Grand Hall of the Museum of History (formerly known as the Museum of Civilization).

• May 12 - Welcome Reception (Chateau Laurier)
• May 13 - Ottawa Alumni Orthopaedic Specialty Update 8am to 4pm (Chateau Laurier). 50th Anniversary Gala Dinner (Museum of Canadian History)

Most people have heard of organ donations, but tissue donations are not as well-known yet they can play a key role in saving lives. Dr. Michael Gross is an orthopaedic surgeon and medical director for the regional tissue bank at the QEII Health Sciences Centre in Halifax. Gross says there's a need for donations and he wants people to understand the difference one donation can make in the lives of so many patients.

If you're willing to travel within Simcoe County, you can lower your wait time for diagnostic scans and surgery. At Stevenson Memorial Hospital in Alliston, you'll wait just eight days for a CT while at Royal Victoria Regional Health Centre (RVH) in Barrie you could wait two months. And the longer you wait for diagnostic scans, the longer you wait for surgery.

Shelburne ER to shut at least 6 days this month, worrying residents

Closures of the Roseway Hospital emergency room in Shelburne just keep coming, a pattern that is concerning and frustrating area residents. The hospital, which serves about 15,000 people in Shelburne County, has announced the ER will be shut for six days in August, but other unexpected closures are also likely. The provincial health authority says there aren't enough doctors and nurses to fill the necessary shifts.

Les Winnipégois doivent attendre en moyenne 37 jours pour obtenir des soins de santé à domicile, conclut le vérificateur général du Manitoba, Norm Ricard, dans un rapport. Ces programmes provinciaux sont censés aider les personnes âgées et celles qui se rétablissent d'une maladie pour qu'elles vivent de façon autonome à la maison au lieu d'être à l'hôpital ou dans un foyer de soins prolongés.
