Health care costs In Canada: Half of those facing major illness struggle financially
Huffington Post
Nearly half of Canadians facing a major health incident like cancer or a stroke are struggling financially as a result of their illnesses, according to a report from Sun Life Financial. The company's annual health index found that 40 per cent of those surveyed earlier this year reported feeling financially strapped after a serious health event or diagnosis, while 53 per cent of 45- to 54-year-olds have been hit hard by unforeseen health care costs.

New website posts Winnipeg's emergency room wait times

Winnipeggers will now be able to see what they're getting into before they head to an emergency room in the city. The Winnipeg Regional Health Authority has launched a website that lets you see emergency room wait times before you go. The site catalogues each hospital in Winnipeg, giving visitors the number of patients in each waiting room and the average wait time. It also gives visitors the longest non-urgent wait time.

Ottawans lured to NY hospital for hip, knee replacements

A hospital in upstate New York is marketing speedy knee and hip replacements to patients in Ottawa. The Alice Hyde Medical Centre is hoping to capitalize on wait times for knee and hip replacements in Ottawa, which is more than 220 days on average. The centre is located in Malone, New York, about a two-hour drive southeast of Ottawa.

You'll wait a lot longer for a knee replacement or cataract surgery if you live in some provinces than in others. The same goes for getting a doctor's appointment.

New children's ER at Surrey Memorial to ease the burden on families
The Vancouver Sun
A new pediatric emergency department at Surrey Memorial Hospital will greatly reduce drive times and inconvenience for Fraser Valley residents. Not only that, but the facility — one of only two children's ERs in the province — is specially designed to make waiting times shorter and to make a visit to the hospital more comfortable for kids.
