Simple Bone Cysts in Kids clinical trial

Participants are requested for a multicentre, randomized clinical trial comparing three minimally invasive interventions for the treatment of paediatric simple bone cysts called "Simple Bone Cysts in Kids (SBoCK)."

If you have not been contacted and are interested in participating in this trial please email rosanna.yankanah@sickkids.ca as soon as possible to help us plan appropriately to provide the necessary support to all participating centres.

The Canadian Arthroplasty Society (CAS) is holding its 2nd annual meeting from Nov. 21-22, 2013 at the InterContinental Hotel in downtown Montreal. Registration is open for this exciting event until Nov. 11. Chaired by Drs. Steve MacDonald (Western University) & Emil Schemitsch (University of Toronto) this two-day meeting will include research presentations, hot topic discussions & round table discussions. Unions: Health cuts anything but good news

Self-discharging from hospital against doctors' orders a big risk

A new report suggests that people who check themselves out of hospitals against the advice of their doctors are likely to make a return trip in the near future. The report says people who discharged themselves were more than twice as likely to be readmitted to a hospital within a month, and three times as likely to visit an emergency room within a week, when compared to people who leave when their doctor says they are ready to go.

Alberta pharmacists to be paid for counselling under new deal
CBC News
Alberta pharmacists have reached an agreement in principle that would see them get paid for counselling patients. Pharmacists already assist diabetics and people who want to stop smoking, Health Minister Fred Horne said. The new deal would compensate them for those services, he said.

Tackling hospital wait times — there's an app for that

In the ongoing battle against to keep wait times down, St. Joseph's Hospital is taking a decidedly 21st Century approach. The hospital network recently rolled out a digital app — one that allows doctors, nurses and administrators to have patient tracking information in the palm of their hands — at its Charlton Campus.

Health care costs In Canada: Half of those facing major illness struggle financially

Nearly half of Canadians facing a major health incident like cancer or a stroke are struggling financially as a result of their illnesses, according to a report from Sun Life Financial. A new pediatric emergency department at Surrey Memorial Hospital will greatly reduce drive times and inconvenience for Fraser Valley residents. Not only that, but the facility — one of only two children's ERs in the province — is specially designed to make waiting times shorter and to make a visit to the hospital more comfortable for kids.

A hospital in upstate New York is marketing speedy knee and hip replacements to patients in Ottawa. The Alice Hyde Medical Centre is hoping to capitalize on wait times for knee and hip replacements in Ottawa, which is more than 220 days on average. The centre is located in Malone, New York, about a two-hour drive southeast of Ottawa.
