Foot and ankle resource helps patients return to mobility after surgery
COA    Share   Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
Canadians requiring foot and ankle surgery to alleviate pain and restore mobility have found comfort in the free booklet, Planning for Your Best Results: From Your Foot and Ankle Surgery. Distributed by the Canadian Orthopaedic Foundation, the resource guides patients through the care path, answers common questions and offers a progress diary.

Co-authored by Drs. Timothy Daniels and Johnny Lau and endorsed by the Canadian Orthopaedic Foot and Ankle Society, this booklet offers much needed relief for patients facing significant surgery wait times.

This informative and in-depth educational resource was developed through the collaborative efforts of the Ontario Orthopaedic Expert Panel and the Canadian Orthopaedic Foundation and was produced with support from Wright Medical Technology Canada and DJO Canada. It is through these excellent partnerships that Canadians now have a trustworthy resource to help provide comfort and to ease the anxiety that goes along with surgery.

Complementing the foot and ankle booklet are procedure-specific information sheets available electronically at canorth.org

National strategy in the works on 'orphan drugs'
The Globe and Mail    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
After years of debate, Canada is set to create a national framework to improve access to 'orphan drugs' for people who suffer from rare disorders. 'Orphan drugs' is a term applied to medications that are used to treat chronic or debilitating conditions that only affect a handful of people. The new framework, announced by federal Health Minister Leona Aglukkaq, will provide a national strategy for authorizing and monitoring the use of orphan drugs as well as helping to spur research and development of new drugs to treat rare diseases. Canada.com    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
Canada's all or nothing abortion debate
Maclean's    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
Rona Ambrose is the minister for status of women. She is also the new enemy of the Canadian pro-choice movement, because she voted in favour of M-312 last week, Conservative MP Stephen Woodworth's controversial motion that would allow for an all-party parliamentary committee to revisit the question of when exactly a human life begins. The motion, which Prime Minister Stephen Harper voted against, was defeated in the House of Commons by a vote of 203 to 91. Critics have called Woodworth's motion disingenuous; he didn't officially reopen the abortion debate, they argue, but he tried to start a conversation that might have led us down that path. More
