Wait times keep on extending for Canada's universal health care

Wait times in Canada's health care system increased between 2012 and 2013, according to a new report from the Fraser Institute — and they are sky high in comparison to 1990s levels. The classical liberal policy institute, based in Vancouver, B.C., asserts that the increase is greatest for elective treatments. However, general levels for all practices are historically high, and physicians consider these times longer than what is clinically reasonable.

Ottawa gets low marks from doctors' group on commitment to health care

A national doctor's association has given the Conservative government low marks on health care and is calling on Ottawa to show leadership in setting national standards as it confronts an aging population. The report from the College of Family Physicians of Canada rates the government's efforts on several fronts and finds them lacking. Among the areas of biggest concern are the absence of a national home-care program, primary care supports and an immunization strategy.

Doctors' group: ER overcrowding is a public health crisis

A doctors' group is calling for national benchmarks aimed at shortening wait times for patients seeking care in hospital emergency departments. The Canadian Association of Emergency Physicians (CAEP) says contrary to popular belief, emergency room overcrowding is not caused by inappropriate use or by patients without their own doctors.

Edmonton doctor trying to take alternative medicine mainstream

An Edmonton doctor who recently won a major medical prize says the only way to bridge the divide between traditional medicine and alternative methods is to listen to the needs of patients. "If everything starts with a patient as the centre of your primary interest, then their interests, their values, their questions are the things that need to matter to you most as their health care provider," says Dr. Sunita Vohra.
