December 30 NATF Application deadline fast approaching

Applications for the North American Travelling Fellowship (NATF) are being accepted until December 30, 2014. This dynamic fellowship is open to surgeons who have completed their residency training in Canada up to three years ago. The tour of Canadian and American centres will begin in the Fall of 2015. We encourage all eligible members to apply. Complete criteria and a downloadable application form can be found at www.coa-aco.org: click on Medical Education in the top menu bar, then click on Travelling Fellowships. Wrist surgery tops list of surgical wait times in Nova Scotia

Wait times for hip and knee surgeries in Nova Scotia were singled out by the provincial auditor general in his report, but there are worse numbers where those came from. According to the province's calculations, the wait for wrist surgery is about 50 per cent longer than the wait for hip surgery. There are 3.5 times as many people waiting for jaw surgery as there are for knee surgery.

ER overcrowding may force MDs to examine patients in waiting room

The University of Alberta Hospital is asking its doctors to see patients in the emergency waiting room in an effort to solve a growing, potentially dangerous problem with overcrowding. But doctors at the hospital are worried about their patients' care, given the long waits and low bed turnover in the emergency department.

De nombreux patients doivent souvent attendre entre six et huit heures avant d'être vus par un médecin, selon des sources. Une situation qui est inacceptable pour le Dr Brian Rowe, urgentiste. Selon lui, l'attente est trop longue, et des patients très malades risquent de ne pas être vus à temps. Il rapporte que la nuit, la salle d'attente est bondée, et que certaines infirmières refusent à présent de travailler aux urgences.

Surgeon wait lists to be kept secret

Ontario health regulators will slam the door on a key piece of information for patients who want to reduce how long they wait for surgery, sometimes in pain or disability, The Free Press has learned. Starting next year, regulators will give each Ontario surgeon a wait time scorecard every three months that shows how long their patients wait to go under the knife and the length of the queue.

Hôpital de Gaspé : des rénovations à l'urgence seulement en raison des compressions

La direction de l'hôpital Hôtel-Dieu de Gaspé va devoir minimiser ses rénovations et se concentrer uniquement sur la réfection de l'urgence, en raison des compressions budgétaires imposées par Québec. Health Minister: Nova Scotia years away from meeting benchmarks on wait times

Nova Scotia is years away from meeting national benchmarks on wait times for hip and knee replacements, the provincial health minister said Wednesday after the auditor general found the province lags all others on the issue. Only 43 per cent of knee replacements and 58 per cent of hip replacements in Nova Scotia met a six-month national benchmark last year — the lowest rates in the country, Michael Pickup said in releasing his first report as auditor general.

New data from the Canadian Institute for Health Information shows more people are dying in the Thunder Bay Regional Health Sciences Centre than five years ago. But while the death rate for the hospital is still below both provincial and national averages, the new number should garner hospital officials’ full attention, said Kira Leeb, a spokesperson with the institute.

A year ago, amid emergency department complaints about wheelchair accessibility and patient confusion, Sarnia's hospital set up in its auditorium a scale model of its emergency department. The "rapid improvement event" had staff and volunteers running through different scenarios, trying to figure out ways to make improvements, said Lisa Regan, head of Bluewater Health's Performance and Transformation System (PTS).
