According to an annual study by Expedia, Americans earn among the fewest vacation days in the world each year, and also leave among the most vacation days unused — despite research that shows the benefits of vacationing. The American Resort Development Association (ARDA) challenges Americans to re-think vacation as a necessity instead of a luxury, and to resolve to take one in the New Year.

Shared property owners in North Vancouver can force sale, B.C. Supreme Court rules

A Supreme Court judge has ruled that a majority of owners in a strata-type project in North Vancouver can ask for a sale of the whole property, even if a minority says the sale will force them out of the only affordable homes in their neighbourhood. That adds one more decision to an increasingly contentious issue in British Columbia — how to deal with jointly owned properties in a province where a quarter of the population lives in collectively owned housing, largely stratas.

Mount Washington ski resort put on market

The owners of Mount Washington Alpine Resort have quietly put the Island's only commercial ski hill on the market. "It's probably been in the process for six to eight months," Don Sharpe, director of business operations, told CHEK News. "Our ownership group is getting a little bit older now, and looking for new opportunities and new things to do." Sharpe did not reveal the asking price or any offers. "It's a private, strategic sale and who knows at this time where it will end up."

Cottage-fee hikes in mail soon

Annual fees for cottage owners in Manitoba's provincial parks are increasing to reduce the burden of Manitoba taxpayers subsidizing cottage owners in Manitoba's provincial parks, Conservation and Water Stewardship Minister Gord Mackintosh said. The new fees will be phased in over the next decade — invoices to the roughly 6,000 cottage owners in 18 provincial parks will likely be mailed out soon — and will be used to maintain and upgrade the parks, Mackintosh said.
