7 brand execs share Canada development wins

Much opportunity exists for brands to grow in Canada, and the major hotel companies plan to do just that this year. According to panelists at the Canadian Hotel Investment Conference, the country is an "open market" ready and ripe for investment. During a breakout session titled "The perfect fit," seven brand development panelists discussed what has occurred in Canadian development over the last year and what is planned for the next 12 months.

Canadians increasingly optimistic over travel plans

It's time to explore: 38 per cent of Canadians anticipate travelling more in the next two or three years, a seven per cent increase over 2012, says the new Global Tourism Watch (GTW) Canada summary report by the Research department of the Canadian Tourism Commission (CTC). Moreover, 79 per cent believe they will spend the same or more on travel within Canada within the next 12 months.

Nova Scotia puts Digby Pines, Liscombe Lodge resorts up for sale, again

Nova Scotia is again trying to unload the last two provincial government-owned resorts, but how much they fetch — if anything — is unclear. Darlene Grant Fiander, the president of the Tourism Industry Association of Nova Scotia, said the resorts were once flagship draws but their importance has diminished, along with government support. Still she's hopeful this sale will work. "It's a big world out there. If you are dealing with a real estate broker that is involved in the global tourism community there probably is lots of investors," she tells CBC News.

Vacation home sales now at pre-recession levels

Vacation home sales have increased nationally for the fourth straight year and have now soared to levels not seen since before the start of the crippling recession in the United States, according to data released recently by the Sussex County Association of Realtors and the National Association of Realtors.
