Begun from a simple idea to "celebrate all that is good about timeshare", the observance is the brainchild of Lisa Ann Schreier, the founder of the educational and consulting site Timeshare Insights and the recently appointed Executive Director of the National Timeshare Owners Association.

The secretary general of North Korea's ski association views the sprawling alpine landscape before him with unabashed pride. Facing a strong, cold wind, he points to a dip in the rugged, tree-covered mountains and says the sunrise there is a sight of unmatched beauty, worthy of the nation's supreme leader, Kim Jong Un. This is the Masik Pass ski resort, North Korea's latest megaproject, the product of 10 months of furious labour intended to show that this country, so often derided for its poverty and isolation, is as civilized and culturally advanced as any other.

Vacation property market ticks up

At one time, people needed to feel connected to a resort to want to buy into it. Memories of summers past worked some strong voodoo. However, by the time of the 2008 recession, that had changed. "People were going to places they'd never been and just saying, 'Well, everything goes up, I'll go there for a weekend and if it's nice I'll buy one,' " said Scott Brown, senior vice-president of Colliers residential division.

Vancouver firm buys Ottawa's Fairmont Chateau Laurier

The iconic Fairmont Chateau Laurier in the nation's capital has new owners: Capital Hotel Limited Partnership, an affiliate of Vancouver-based Larco Investments. The century-old hotel, valued at an estimated $125 million, was just put up for sale along with another luxury hotel, the Fairmont Washington D.C. Georgetown. Ivanhoe, the real estate subsidiary of Caisse de Depot et Placement du Quebec, sold this hotel and other European properties in an effort to focus on other asset classes.

Century signs Manila Bay resort development deal, shares rise

Century Properties signed an agreement with Eagle I Landholdings to develop five hectares of the Japanese billionaire's entertainment and gaming resort project. The Manila-based developer also signed a separate deal to acquire a 36 per cent interest in Eagle I, which owns the 44-hectare site. "We're not interested in operating the casino, we are just a locator at the Manila Bay Resorts," spokeswoman Terrie Fucanan-Yu said.
