Commission members are essentially calling for a reversal of the redeployment plan approved by the City Council last year that reduced available firefighting resources but increased medical response capabilities in some areas. CSFA    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
Ed Bent, a past president of California State Firefighters' Association and a legend in California fire training, passed away March 27. He was 94. Mr. Bent was born Oct. 29, 1917 in Boston. After graduating from high school, he hitchhiked across the country to be with his father in Los Angeles. He blossomed as a Christian in California, mentoring youth by teaching first high school and later college Sunday school classes and directing a choir.

Ed began his firefighting career with the Los Angeles Fire Department in 1943, and he received a vocational education degree from UCLA in 1951. In 1952 he moved to Redding, and started working with the State of California as a regional fire instructor, responsible for teaching firefighting in 13 northern California counties. At CSFA's 50th annual conference in 1972, Bent was elected president of CSFA. The highlight of his fire service career was working as Superintendent of Fire Service Training for the State Fire Marshal's Office. He received numerous awards for his innovative teaching contributions during his tenure from 1965 until his retirement in 1978. The Ed Bent Training Excellence Award was established in his honor. In retirement he remained active on a number of national firefighting training committees, served on the board of the Sacramento-based Pioneer Mutual Hook and Ladder Society, and was involved with the local chapter of the Fellowship of Christian Firefighters. Ed was also a founding member of the Sacramento Area Firefighters Chaplaincy board, serving as president at the time of his death.

Ed was preceded in death by his beloved wife Lynn, and two of his daughters, Deanna DiNallo and Karrin Howell. He leaves behind his daughter, Clarissa Miller, Deanna's three children, Traci, Cheri and Tony Townsend.

Services will be 11 a.m., Monday, April 9, at Fremont Presbyterian Church, 5770 Carlson Drive, Sacramento 95819.

Donations in Ed's memory may be made to Fremont Presbyterian Church or to the Sacramento Area Firefighters Chaplaincy, 4425 Dudley Boulevard, McClellan, CA 95652.

Free Junior Firefighter recruitment video available to aid recruitment
NVFC National Junior Firefighter    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
The National Volunteer Fire Council's National Junior Firefighter Program is offering a new resource for junior firefighter programs nationwide. Thanks to support from Tyco International, a junior firefighter recruitment video is now available for download on the National Junior Firefighter Program web site at www.nvfc.org/juniors.

Program advisors and department leaders can use the 4-minute video, which features juniors participating and explaining their interest in junior firefighting and their plans for their future, to recruit youth for their program at the local level. The video can be downloaded and taken to schools, community organizations, or department open houses to educate youth and adults about the benefit of junior firefighter programs.

Junior firefighter programs are a valuable recruiting tool for departments. In the United States, 71 percent of first responders are volunteers. According to the National Fire Protection Association, since 1984 the number of volunteer firefighters has declined by more than 10 percent while calls for help have more than doubled. Introducing youth to the fire service creates lifelong support of the fire departments, whether as career or volunteer first responders or community supporters.

The National Junior Firefighter Program provides resources, tools, and information for fire departments and youth nationwide. Junior firefighter programs introduce youth to the fire service in a safe and fun way, while learning important fire prevention and safety, leadership, and teamwork skills. Hours spent at the station can often be counted for school community service requirements. Juniors and departments can join the Program for free at www.nvfc.org/juniors.

Watch or download the video at www.nvfc.org/juniors. Find out more about the National Junior Firefighter Program, including training opportunities through the National Junior Firefighter Academy, at www.nvfc.org/juniors.

Debate continues over future of Pinole fire protection
Contra Costa Times via The Oakland Tribune    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
The future of Pinole's fire protection remains in limbo, as the city weighs whether to continue to run its own fire department or contract with a neighboring agency. At a March 27 special workshop, the City Council appeared to have all but ruled out a contract with one of two interested agencies as too expensive. But recently, the union representing all three departments' firefighters urged the council to reconsider contracting with the Contra Costa Fire District, arguing that that agency can provide a more complete menu of services than the much smaller Rodeo-Hercules Fire District. But nine years after the 2001 attacks, Ray Pfiefer, 54, was diagnosed with stage 4 kidney cancer that had spread to his bones. Ongoing chemotherapy and other treatment is costly and no longer covered by insurance.
