Los Angeles Times    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
A Los Angeles Fire Department plan to put six ambulances back in service to help improve lagging response times amounts to less than a "Band-Aid" fix to the agency's needs, a City Council member said. Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa called for the ambulances to be restored to service last month after fire officials acknowledged that the time it takes rescuers to get to victims in medical emergencies had fallen below nationally accepted standards. Brownouts delay response to Kentucky blaze
The Lexington Herald-Leader    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
A recent fire in Lexington, Ky., burned unchecked for several minutes, destroying a family's kitchen, because the nearest fire engine had temporarily been taken out of service. It took seven minutes for firefighters from Station 20, about 2 1/2 miles away, to get to the scene, officials said. Station 12, which is less than a half-mile away, was unoccupied due to a brownout. The delayed response was the second incident in two days that drew attention to the practice of brownouts. More
