Posters on the Hill 2015 — call for submissions
Application Period: Sept. 2-Nov. 5, 2014
As the undergraduate research community works to ensure that those in the U.S. Congress have a clear understanding of the research and education programs they fund, nothing more effectively demonstrates the value of undergraduate research than a student participant's words, work, and stories. Undergraduate research must be among the programs that members of Congress understand if it is to continue to be supported, and to grow.
Students and their faculty mentors are invited to apply for the Council on Undergraduate Research's (CUR) 19th annual undergraduate poster session on Capitol Hill. In addition to other events, there will be an evening poster session and reception where students will have the opportunity to speak directly to members of Congress and demonstrate how they have been impacted by these programs.

Social Science Division Student travel awards
The Social Science Division of the Council on Undergraduate Research (CUR) is offering a limited number of travel grants, up to $200 each, for undergraduate students presenting the results of research that they have conducted at a regional or national, discipline-specific meeting during the academic year 2014-2015. Award recipients are required to acknowledge CUR for support of their travel in their talk or poster. After the meeting, a brief report about the experience is expected. Minority students are encouraged to apply.
- Undergraduate students at any level can apply but preference will be given to juniors and seniors or students attending 2 year community colleges.
- Student's mentor must be a CUR member or the student's home institution must be a CUR institutional member.
- Student's home institution must match the $200 CUR travel grant.
Selection Criteria: Travel Award recipients will be selected on a first come, first serve basis provided that the above criteria are met. Only one travel award will be granted per institution.
- An electronic copy of the meeting abstract, including the title of the abstract, student author, faculty mentor, and institution. If the abstract is written in highly technical terms, the applicant may also submit a brief (maximum 500 words) summary of the work written for an audience consisting of social scientists from a wide range of disciplines. The abstract should note the study's objective, methods, results and importance.
- Proof of acceptance to the regional or national meeting.
- A list of itemized meeting expenses (travel, housing, and registration).
- An email from sponsoring faculty acknowledging (1) student’s enrollment as an undergraduate, (2) confirmation of student’s planned attendance at the meeting, (3) confirmation of institution's monetary match of $200, and (4) confirmation of individual or institutional CUR membership.
- Reimbursement of travel expenses (up to $200) will require copies of receipts and confirmation of student’s attendance/presentation at the meeting.
Deadline: Applications for a travel grant to a fall 2014 or spring 2015 meeting are now being accepted. Award decisions will be made on a first come, first served basis.

Biology Division Student Travel Awards announcement
The Biology Division of the Council on Undergraduate Research is offering a limited number of travel grants, up to $250 each, for undergraduate students presenting original research results at a regional or national, discipline-specific meeting during the fiscal year 2014-2015. Award recipients are required to acknowledge CUR for support of their travel in their talk or poster, to complete a short evaluation form about their meeting experience and to submit a PDF file of their poster. Minority students are encouraged to apply.

Interdisciplinary STEM Learning Spaces: Your input desired by the Learning Spaces Collaboratory by Oct. 1
Interdisciplinary STEM learning spaces: What do you know about them and what do you want to know about them? Continuing a collaboration with CUR, the Learning Spaces Collaboratory (LSC) is organizing a December webinar in which such questions will be addressed. One institutional story to be featured is the new ID STEM lab at the University of Maryland Baltimore County, developed with support from HHMI, as a prototype space to inform future planning at UMBC. Request #1: CUR members are asked to submit photos and description of spaces specifically designed to dissolve boundaries between disciplines and that have a good story to tell. Request #2: Reflections from CUR member on the why and how of interdisciplinary STEM spaces to inform the shaping of the webinar. This event is co-hosted by the Community College Undergraduate Research Initiative (CCURI) and the Council on Undergraduate Research (CUR). With support from the National Science Foundation, CCURI's mission is to support the development, implementation, and evaluation of undergraduate research programs at our Nation’s community colleges. This event will feature over 40 of the best and brightest undergraduate scientists form community colleges in the CCURI partnership who will present posters on research projects and experiences. Nurturing creativity and passion in undergraduate research: A scholarly discussion
Pre-ISSOTL CUR Symposium, Université Laval, Québec-city, Oct. 22, 2014, 9 a.m.-4 p.m.
The fifth Council on Undergraduate Research (CUR) sponsored pre-ISSOTL International Symposium will take place on Wednesday, October 22nd, 2014 at Universite Laval in Quebec City. This symposium will focus exploring on how undergraduate research programs can provide individuals and institutions opportunities to nurture creativity and passion in students and faculty. Participants will work with colleagues from other institutions to craft practical strategies related to the following themes:
The program for the day will include brief keynote addresses, poster sessions, and table discussions. We will conclude with a discussion on how to foster international conversations on undergraduate research.
- Leveraging innovation, design thinking, and creativity in undergraduate research;
- Fostering interdisciplinarity and collaborative scholarship;
- Ideating transformative learning spaces and structures;
- Engaging external stakeholders and building partnerships.

Starting a successful research program and doing scholarly work at a predominantly undergraduate institution pose unique challenges for a beginning faculty member. A goal of the institute is to give individual pre-tenured faculty members the opportunity to learn from and discuss with experienced faculty how to establish and manage a research program with undergraduates. While at the institute, participants will also prepare plans for starting and/or advancing their individual research programs at their respective campuses. A range of topics will be covered during the institute that show ways to achieve career success in undergraduate research by learning how to:
- select undergraduate researchers,
- mentor student researchers and develop and use their research skills,
- manage time — balancing teaching, research and service activities,
- develop and select research projects appropriate for undergraduates,
- adapt to an undergraduate research environment vs. that in graduate school,
- link research to the classroom, and
- develop grantsmanship skills related to gaining external and institutional research support.

5 tips to get involved in undergraduate research
Penn State News
Danhao "Spark" Ma, a fifth-year senior majoring in energy engineering, got involved in undergraduate research as a freshman at Penn State Altoona. When he transferred to the University Park campus two years later, Ma's professor in Altoona introduced him to a colleague at the new campus to help him further his undergraduate research experience. In the past four years, Ma has presented multiple projects the Penn State's Undergraduate Exhibition and published two academic papers.
Report shows grim economic outlook for colleges, universities

The latest report on public universities released by Moody's Investors Service does not have good news to deliver. As one of the most reputable credit rating agencies in the country, Moody's has been a veritable benchmark for U.S. higher education status and progress. Like the past few years, limited revenue growth from tuition and falling enrollments do not augur well for the future of our colleges. The study has not revealed any new avenues that will bring in revenue in the coming months, which leads one to wonder where they will find sustenance for their high operational costs.
Symposium highlights undergraduate research, service projects

Summer student research and service efforts spanning a wide variety of interests took center stage at the fifth annual University of Delaware Undergraduate Research and Service Celebratory Symposium held Aug. 14. More than 350 undergraduate research and service scholars and visiting scholars presented their findings and shared their service experiences through poster displays and oral presentations.
