Psychology Division Presentation Awards
CUR
The Psychology Division of the Council on Undergraduate Research will be providing presentation awards ($100 Amazon gift cards) to students of CUR members who are presenting at the following regional undergraduate research conferences: Rocky Mountain Psychological Association (RMPA), Midwestern Psychological Association (MPA), Eastern Psychological Association (EPA), Southeastern Psychological Association (SEPA), Southwestern Psychological Association (SWPA) and Western Psychological Association (WPA). One award will also be given to students presenting at Association for Psychological Science (APS). Students are encouraged to use the award to purchase educational materials.

Eligibility criteria:
  • Student must be an undergraduate enrolled at a 2- or 4-year institution during the academic year of 2014-2015.
  • Upon applying for this award, the student must have submitted an abstract to one of the following psychology conferences: RMPA, MPA, EPA, SEPA, SWPA WPA, or APS.
  • In order to receive the award, the student must be accepted to present the research.
  • Student's mentor must be a CUR member or the student’s home institution must be a CUR institutional member.
  • If multiple undergraduate students co-author a single presentation, they will share the award.
Application materials:
  1. Short abstract including title and author names and affiliations.
  2. Long abstract or 1-2 page summary of the project.
  3. Brief (250-350 word) description of the role of the student in the research project.
  4. Name of the CUR faculty mentor. Prior to selection it will be determined that the mentor is a CUR member in good standing.
  5. Copy of acceptance e-mail (this can be included with the application or sent to Mary Pat Twomey (mptwomey@cur.org) upon receipt.

Selection Criteria: The abstract and long abstract or 1-2 page summary of the research will be reviewed by three CUR councilors for quality and one research project will be selected from each of the above listed conferences for the award. "Beyond the Basics" Proposal Writing Workshop — directly following CUR Dialogues

There is an additional workshop for those who are interested in receiving in-depth coaching on proposal writing strategies. "Beyond the Basics: Proposal Writing Workshop" will begin at 1:30 p.m. on Saturday, Feb. 21 and end at noon on Sunday, Feb. 22. There is an additional fee for this workshop.

Call for CUR Fellows Awards Nominations

The nominations period for the 2016 awards is now open. The deadline for submission is Dec. 1, 2014.

The CUR Fellows awards are presented at the biennial Conference to two CUR members who have influenced undergraduate research through their own research, through scholarly or creative projects with undergraduates, and through demonstrated leadership activities. Each CUR Fellow also receives a Brian Andreen-CUR Student Research Fellowship to be awarded to a deserving undergraduate at his/her respective institution. Psychology Division Mid-Career Mentoring Award Nominations

The Psychology Division requests nominations for a Mid-Career Mentoring Award. The award is presented at the biennial National Conference to a CUR Psychology Division member who has influenced undergraduate research through his/her own research, through scholarly or creative projects with undergraduates, and/or through demonstrated leadership activities. The award consists of $500. In addition, the profile and accomplishments of the award winner will be featured in the Psychology Division's newsletter.

Social Science Division Student Travel Awards
CUR
The Social Science Division is offering a limited number of travel grants, up to $200 each, for undergraduate students presenting the results of research that they have conducted at a regional or national, discipline-specific meeting during the academic year 2014-2015. Award recipients are required to acknowledge CUR for support of their travel in their talk or poster. After the meeting, a brief report about the experience is expected. Minority students are encouraged to apply.

Biology Division Student Travel Awards Announcement

The Biology Division is offering a limited number of travel grants, up to $250 each, for undergraduate students presenting original research results at a regional or national, discipline-specific meeting during the fiscal year 2014-2015. Award recipients are required to acknowledge CUR for support of their travel in their talk or poster, to complete a short evaluation form about their meeting experience and to submit a PDF file of their poster. Minority students are encouraged to apply.

We invite you to apply to send a team to a new Council of Undergraduate Research (CUR) institute aimed at broadening participation and increasing access to and diversity in STEM programs. PIs with graduate programs can no longer be successful in obtaining funding by providing lip service with respect to broader impacts. Institutions accepted will send small teams of 3-5 faculty and administrators who will work together to craft an action plan to implement change on their home campus. The institute is designed for faculty and administrators to develop (or enhance) their knowledge, skills, and competencies in increasing access, fostering diversity, and creating an inclusive environment for students from underrepresented groups. An expressed goal of the institute is for participating institutions to develop an authentic program in support of broadening participation of students from underrepresented groups.

Undergraduate Research in the Social Sciences Institute

The Institute will assist campus-based teams of 3-6 members in developing transformative opportunities for undergraduate research in the social sciences.

Building on the information shared at the institute and working in close collaboration with a team facilitator, institute teams will leave with an action plan to bring back to their campus to strengthen and grow undergraduate research in the social sciences on their respective campuses. Although not required, teams will be encouraged to establish interdisciplinary action plans both within and beyond the social sciences to best leverage resources on their campus.

Department of Energy 2015 Summer Term Internship/Fellowship Program

The Office of Science / Office of Workforce Development for Teachers and Scientists (WDTS) is pleased to announce that it is accepting applications to its 2015 Summer Term internship/fellowship programs. These programs, which offer opportunities for direct engagement in scientific research and technology featuring specialized instrumentation; large-scale, multidisciplinary efforts; and/or scientific user facilities, are available for undergraduate students enrolled at community colleges and/or four-year institutions, and for visiting faculty. Selected students or faculty participate at one of 17 DOE Laboratories/Facilities, receive stipends, and may qualify for travel and housing assistance.

US Department of Energy Mickey Leland Energy Fellowship Program (MLEF)
ORAU
The Mickey Leland Energy Fellowship (MLEF) Program provides students with an opportunity to gain and develop research skills with the Department of Energy's Office of Fossil Energy for 10 weeks over the summer. For 20 years, this program has increased awareness of DOE research opportunities to students pursuing STEM degrees (science, technology, engineering and math). The goal of the program is to improve opportunities for women and minority students in these fields, however all eligible candidates are encouraged to apply. Stipends start at $600 per week and eligible Fellows will receive an additional travel and housing allowance. For more information, visit http://orise.orau.gov/mlef/.

Eligibility
  • Be at least 18 years of age at time of application;
  • Be a U.S. Citizen;
  • Have a cumulative GPA of at least 3.0;
