CUR recognizes institutions to be represented at 18th Annual Posters on the Hill
The Council on Undergraduate Research is proud to recognize the institutions which will be represented at this year's 18th Annual Posters on the Hill. As the undergraduate research community works to ensure that those in the U.S. Congress have a clear understanding of the research and education programs they fund, nothing more effectively demonstrates the value of undergraduate research than a student participant's words, work and stories. Hosted on April 29, 2014, CUR will invite representatives from federal funding agencies, members of Congress, and Congressional staff to attend the evening poster session.

CUR President visits British Council on Undergraduate Research (BCUR) Posters in Parliament event
Julio Rivera, CUR's executive board president, traveled to England this week to be the guest of BCUR at their second annual Posters in Parliament event. Modeled after CUR's Posters on the Hill, Posters in Parliament showcases the undergraduate research, scholarly and creative inquiry pursuits of students enrolled at universities in Britain to members of Parliament and their staff.

Psychology Division Award
The Psychology Division of the Council on Undergraduate Research will be providing presentation awards ($100 gift cards to Amazon) to students of CUR members who are presenting at the following regional undergraduate research conferences: Rocky Mountain Psychological Association (RMPA), Midwestern Psychological Association (MPA), Eastern Psychological Association (EPA), Southeastern Psychological Association (SEPA), Southwestern Psychological Association (SWPA) and Western Psychological Association (WPA). One award will also be given to students presenting at Association for Psychological Science (APS). Students are encouraged to use the presentation award on educational materials.
  • Student must be an undergraduate enrolled at a 2- or 4-year institution during the academic year of 2013-2014.
  • Upon applying for this award, the student must have submitted an abstract to one of the following psychology conferences: RMPA, MPA, EPA, SEPA, SWPA WPA, or APS.
  • In order to receive the award, the student must be accepted to present their research.
  • Student's mentor must be a CUR member or the student's home institution must be a CUR institutional member.
  • If multiple undergraduate students co-author a single presentation, they will share the award.

Proposal Writing Institute
Next Offering: July 17-21, 2014 — University of South Alabama, Mobile, Ala.
Application Deadline: Thursday, May 1, 2014

This Institute will bring together faculty and administrators interested in preparing proposals for submission to external funding agencies. The four-day Institute will consist of one-on-one work with a mentor, writing, small group discussions and critiquing of proposals. The Institute has been developed to assist novice to experienced proposal writers in drafting complete proposals for submission. Prior to the Institute, participants will be able to access information that will help them begin to draft their proposal.

Time at the Institute will consist of periods of proposal preparation interspersed with one-on-one mentoring by experienced and successful proposal writers, members of grants review panels, former program officers and/or Directors of Sponsored Programs Offices. Small group discussions and group critiquing sessions round out the Institute. Participants who come well-prepared and who work hard should be able to leave the Institute with a completed (or nearly completed) proposal to the granting agency of their choice.

Application Deadline: May 1, 2014. Applications reviewed on a rolling basis; Institute may reach capacity prior to application deadline. For more details, visit:

2014 Geothermal Student Competition
The U.S. Department Energy's Geothermal Technologies Program and Oak Ridge Institute for Science Education are pleased to announce the 2014 Geothermal Student Competition. The Geothermal Student Competition seeks students interested in building and showcasing scientific research, communication and leadership skills to promote geothermal energy as a player in the nation's renewable energy future. This year's event focuses on a non-technical barrier to geothermal development: public communications. Energy production can be a complex topic to explain to a broad public audience, and describing energy that comes from a subsurface environment — difficult to visualize for many — amplifies the challenge of explaining geothermal energy, how it works and how it can benefit consumers.

Why few women major in STEM fields, and what the UO is doing to change that

One look at data compiled by the University of Oregon's Office of Institutional Research from fall 2013, says it all: 34.2 percent of undergraduates majoring in mathematics are female, while 42.8 percent of chemistry majors are. Females make up 20.9 percent of physics majors, while computer science undergraduates have the lowest percentage with an unsettling 14.1 percent. These low numbers reflect a problem that is hardly just local.

MU students present research at Capitol for Undergraduate Research Day
Students from the four universities in the UM System presented their research to legislators and spectators at the State Capitol as part of Undergraduate Research Day. The symposium featured posters of 46 students from MU, UMSL, UMKC, and Missouri S&T. Of the students presenting, 20 were MU sophomores, juniors or seniors.

2015 budget would boost investments in STEM education
President Barack Obama's fiscal 2015 budget blueprint proposes a number of changes to improving and strengthening the quality and quantity of workers in science, technology, education and mathematics fields. The proposal seeks to focus federal STEM education efforts on five areas identified in the government's five-year strategic plan: P-12 instruction, undergraduate education, graduate education, broadening participation in STEM to women and minorities and STEM education activities that take place outside the traditional classroom.

University to re-evaluate undergraduate research opportunities

St. Edward's University is in the midst of a dialogue about how undergraduate research opportunities are handled at the university. Spearheaded by the Faculty Development and Student Research Academic Planning Group, members of this committee are wrestling with issues, including whether the program should be more unified or stay as it is.
