GeoCUR Undergraduate Research Mentor Award
The Geoscience Division of the Council on Undergraduate Research has established an annual award to highlight the importance of mentoring undergraduate research activities.
Eligibility: All Geoscience faculty involved in mentoring undergraduate research.
Prize: $500 along with a year-long CUR membership.
Expectations of Awardee: Short presentation when prize is awarded during the NAGT luncheon at the national GSA conference each fall.
The Geosciences Division of CUR annually recognizes an individual who serves as a role model for productive and transformative student-faculty mentoring relationships and for maintaining a sustained and innovative approach to the enterprise of undergraduate research.
Evidence of transformative student-faculty mentoring relationships include: leadership in fostering and sustaining the undergraduate research enterprise, student-mentor collaborations culminating in presentations at national or regional meetings and/or publication with student co-authors in peer-reviewed journals, and innovative approaches to involving undergraduates in research experiences incorporating research activities into the classroom and service learning.
Nomination (including self nominations) materials: A two-page detailed narrative exploring how the candidate meets the criteria of the award, up to five-page CV that is focused on interactions with students, and two to five letters of support (at least one letter from a former student). The application remains on file for three years.

Tapping the potential of all students: Developing and enhancing undergraduate research in community college settings
July 18-20, 2014, Southeast Community College, Lincoln, NE
The Council on Undergraduate Research and National Council of Instructional Administrators (NCIA) are currently soliciting applications from community college teams to attend a two-day workshop designed to assist two-year institutions to expand and enhance their undergraduate research programs and curriculum. This NSF grant-funded workshop (DUE 09-20083) will reimburse workshop tuition, meals and lodging expenses for the selected institutions' team members to attend the workshop.
Applications are due by April 25, 2014.

Conference participants will share strategies and models that have helped strengthen undergraduate research in their institutions in plenary talks, an exciting variety of conference sessions and through the informal networking that is a hallmark of CUR conferences. In support of the goals of the conference a portion of the monies raised has been allocated to attendee travel awards. Proposal Writing Institute
Next Offering: July 17-21, 2014 — University of South Alabama, Mobile, Ala.
Application Deadline: Thursday, May 22, 2014
This Institute will bring together faculty and administrators interested in preparing proposals for submission to external funding agencies. The four-day Institute will consist of one-on-one work with a mentor, writing, small group discussions and critiquing of proposals. The Institute has been developed to assist novice to experienced proposal writers in drafting complete proposals for submission. Prior to the Institute, participants will be able to access information that will help them begin to draft their proposal.
Time at the Institute will consist of periods of proposal preparation interspersed with one-on-one mentoring by experienced and successful proposal writers, members of grants review panels, former program officers and/or Directors of Sponsored Programs Offices. Small group discussions and group critiquing sessions round out the Institute. Participants who come well-prepared and who work hard should be able to leave the Institute with a completed (or nearly completed) proposal to the granting agency of their choice.

Fall SULI application is now open
The Office of Science/Office of Workforce Development for Teachers and Scientists (WDTS) is pleased to announce it is accepting applications to its 2014 Fall Term Science Undergraduate Laboratory Internship (SULI) program, with all required application materials, including recommendations, due by 5 p.m. ET on May 30, 2014. The SULI program encourages undergraduate students to pursue science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) careers by providing research experiences at Department of Energy (DOE) laboratories, where selected students participate as interns appointed at participating host labs. They perform research, under the guidance of laboratory staff scientists or engineers, on projects supporting the DOE mission.

The SULI program is sponsored and managed by the DOE Office of Science's, Office of Workforce Development for Teachers and Scientists (WDTS) in collaboration with the DOE laboratories. The Department of Energy's Office of Science is the single largest supporter of basic research in the physical sciences in the United States and is working to address some of the most pressing challenges of our time.
Mentors help create a sustainable pipeline for women in STEM
Women make up about half of the workforce in America, but they only represent 24 percent of the workforce in STEM fields. Why should we care? First and foremost, this statistic calls attention to an untapped potential; talent that we need in science, technology, engineering and mathematics in order to remain competitive from a global perspective. But for women, this is important on another level because careers in STEM industries offer better compensation and more career advancement opportunities. In fact, women who hold STEM positions earn 92 cents to the dollar versus 77 cents for women who are not in these fields.
Calvin College receives $104,000 grant for undergraduate research
Four undergraduate students at Calvin College will embark on in-depth research projects, thanks to a $104,000 award from the Beckman Scholars Program. The students, under the direction of a faculty mentor, will research topics in biology, chemistry and biochemistry. The goal of the program is to prepare students for graduate school and develop leaders in scientific research and innovation.
