Upcoming submission deadline: Nurturing Creativity and Passion in Undergraduate Research: A Scholarly Discussion
Pre-ISSOTL CUR Symposium, Université Laval, Québec-city, Oct. 22, 2014, 9 a.m.-4 p.m.
In this day-long symposium, we plan to explore how undergraduate research programs can provide individuals and institutions opportunities to nurture creativity and passion in students and faculty. Posters will play key roles in this seminar; in particular, viewing and discussing posters will be central to a number of the sessions. All delegates are invited to submit a poster abstract by July 25, 2014 to firstname.lastname@example.org for display on the seminar web site before the event and during the symposium. Notifications of acceptance to the poster session will be sent in early August.
We are interested in posters about undergraduate research and inquiry, focused on the theme and sub-themes of the symposium:
- Leveraging innovation, design thinking, and creativity in undergraduate research,
- Fostering interdisciplinarity and collaborative scholarship,
- Ideating transformative learning spaces and structures, and
- Engaging external stakeholders and building partnerships.

The institute will assist teams of 3-5 faculty and administrators in developing transformative opportunities for undergraduate research, scholarship and creativity in the arts and humanities.
Beginning a research program in the natural sciences at a predominantly undergraduate institution

Starting a successful research program and doing scholarly work at a predominantly undergraduate institution pose unique challenges for a beginning faculty member. A goal of the institute is to give individual pre-tenured faculty members the opportunity to learn from and discuss with experienced faculty how to establish and manage a research program with undergraduates. While at the institute, participants will also prepare plans for starting and/or advancing their individual research programs at their respective campuses. A range of topics will be covered during the institute that show ways to achieve career success in undergraduate research by learning how to:
- select undergraduate researchers,
- mentor student researchers and develop and use their research skills,
- manage time — balancing teaching, research and service activities,
- develop and select research projects appropriate for undergraduates,
- adapt to an undergraduate research environment vs. that in graduate school,
- link research to the classroom, and
- develop grantsmanship skills related to gaining external and institutional research support.

Undergraduate Research Education Program to enhance diversity in the Environmental Health Sciences (R25)

The NIH Research Education Program (R25) supports research education activities in the mission areas of the NIH. The goal of this NIEHS undergraduate research education R25 program is to support educational activities that enhance the diversity of the biomedical, behavioral and clinical research workforce in the environmental health sciences. To this end, this funding opportunity announcement encourages the development of creative educational activities with a primary focus on research experiences for undergraduates at the junior and senior level.
New NASA program has undergraduates designing and flying payloads

A new program organized by NASA's Science Mission Directorate is providing undergraduates an unprecedented opportunity to actively take part in science missions both on Earth and in space. The new Undergraduate Student Instrument Program, in its inaugural year, is geared to promoting the study of science, technology, engineering and math through direct, hands-on involvement by students in scientific research projects.
Are colleges already easing STEM skills shortage?
There is always plenty of debate on how serious a shortage the country has of science, technology, engineering and mathematics, or STEM, graduates, but now comes word that universities are beginning to offer new degree programs that will better train students in emerging technology fields. According to an article at Tech Page One, "Now, the traditional STEM undergraduate majors ... are evolving to better align graduates with new jobs in the tech sector."
Study: Male scientists employ fewer women in labs
Though there are almost as many women as men in undergraduate science courses, the gender disparity grows at higher levels of study. Why? One reason could be that male scientists tend to choose men over women for lab positions. A new study published in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences examined 39 biology departments at top research institutions in the U.S.
NSF's summer undergraduate research program gets underway at Univeristy of Delaware
Every year, a handful of universities around the country host prestigious National Science Foundation-funded Research Experience for Undergraduates programs, pairing the best and brightest undergraduate students with research scientists.
STEM education growing, but still has room for improvement
The revival of interest in STEM education started with the national Educate to Innovate campaign in 2009. The campaign is designed to bring American students to competitive ranks with their international counterpart when it comes to the subjects of science, technology, engineering and mathematics. Educators, organizations and the federal government have all taken steps to spark interest in both STEM education and careers. Five years later, the revival of STEM education is still in its infant steps, and it still has room to grow in both diversity and innovation.
