When DBIA was established in 1993, design-build authority at the state level was confined to Virginia. Today, only eight states limit public agencies' use of design-build procurement and there is not a single state in which design-build is not permitted in some limited fashion.More

Thruway Chairman Milstein announces community meetings with new NY bridge's design-build team

New York State Thruway Authority Chairman Howard P. Milstein has announced community meetings where the public will get its first chance to meet the selected design-build team for the New NY Bridge. Next week, representatives from Tappan Zee Constructors, the Thruway Authority, and the Governor's office will host meetings in Westchester and Rockland Counties to present the design-build team's bridge design and comprehensive plan in addition to answering questions from the public. More

The Pankow Legacy
A new book, A Better Way to Build: A History of the Pankow Companies, was recently reviewed in both DBIA's IQ and ENR. It details how Charles Pankow adopted and promoted the design-build method of project delivery. The book is available from DBIA's online bookstore. The Design Management Guide for the Design-Build Environment mentioned in the review is also available through the bookstore. DBIA members note: a condensed version of the Guide is part of DBIA's Manual of Practice and is available for download from the website.More

Two top candidates to succeed U.S. Department of Transportation Secretary Ray LaHood apparently are taking themselves out of the running. Los Angeles Mayor Anthony Villaraigosa, a candidate favored by many, issued a statement recently that ruled out serving at USDOT. Villaraigosa committed to serving out the remaining handful of months of his term as Mayor.More

Design-build bill discussed in North Dakota Senate

A bill which would allow North Dakota to utilize a design-build process for design and construction of state highway projects was heard in the Senate Transportation Committee on Jan. 31. The theoretical advantage to design-build is that reduces the time frame to complete the project, while reducing costs as well. Rather than having a separate company to design, contract and construct a project, the middle-man contractor is cut out. In this method, the owner has a single contract with a single entity to provide the design and construction.More

University of Missouri-Kansas City DBIA student chapter wins DBIA-Upper Midwest title and trip to New Orleans

A UMKC student team participated in the 1st DBIA National Student Competition, winning the Mid-America / Upper Midwest title and a trip to the National DBIA Conference in New Orleans. The competition was comprised of responding to a Request for Qualifications for a Performing Arts Center of approximately 85,000 square-feet to be located at a university in Oklahoma.More

Mortenson Construction renovates three historic federal buildings

Mortenson Construction has converted three buildings in the Chicago Loop Retail Historic District into modern, energy-efficient federal office facilities for the U.S. General Services Administration. The $26 million modernization project encompassed nearly a half-block of Chicago’s Loop along State Street north of Jackson and involved working closely with the City of Chicago and historic preservation groups.More

RFQ - Washington, D.C.
The Office of the Deputy Mayor for Planning and Economic Development seeks Statements of Qualifications from qualified real estate development teams to respond to their RFQ to for the disposition and development of 66.57 acres located on the property formerly known as the Walter Reed Army Medical Center. General information is on this site. There will be a pre-response conference and site visit held at the site on Feb. 19; time, place and preregistration instructions will be posted at on Feb. 7. Attendees will be requested to preregister for the conference no later than Feb. 14.
