Myth vs. reality
DBIA    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
A recent article in the Sublette (Wyoming) Examiner discusses the selection of an architect to design a new Sublette Center, a senior living facility. A county commissioner had suggested using design-build for the contract, asking if they hired the architect and the design wasn't suitable, would they have to hire another architect to do the design from scratch. However, a consultant hired by the county was of the opinion that with the scope and specifications defined, using design-build would waste time and effort. "He said that having the design completed is imperative to see what the costs might be."

That, however, is not how design-build works. New York state has reversed decades of adherence to design-bid-build and chosen design-build specifically to get much-needed infrastructure projects designed, built and in operation faster and more efficiently. While DBIA generally advocates the use of performance specifications (in which the project owner sets the desired results and budget limits and the design-builder produces a design to meet those criteria), design-build can usually produce a finished project that will meet, if not exceed, the owner's requirements. Do you know about all your member benefits?
DBIA    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
As a member, you're probably aware of the information we send out - this e-newsletter is one source and our journal, Integration Quarterly, another. One of these is access to epipeline - a source of information on upcoming government contracts. Contact Sean Campbell at epipeline, for information on accessing this information.

For example, if you're an Industry Partner member contact, you can nominate one owner for a free one-year individual membership. They'll receive all the benefits of DBIA membership - it's a good way to encourage an owner who already appreciates the benefits of design-build or educate one who's still undecided. And, for owners you'd like to encourage or educate or provide a networking opportunity, DBIA conferences offer some owners a scholarship to help them defray the costs of attending one of the conferences we offer every year.
