Washington public agencies warm up to design-build projects
Seattle Daily Journal of Commerce    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
Collaboration between firms in design-build construction projects yields substantial benefits, and government agencies are taking notice. Public design-build projects are becoming more prevalent across the country due to the time and money savings they usually provide an owner. These benefits are the result of a firm's collaboration with project experts and consultants. More

Beyond blueprints: 3-D saves time, money
The Boston Globe    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
It was the kind of problem that could quickly turn a construction project into a nightmare. A drainage pipe for a new research center at the University of Massachusetts Medical School in Worcester was in the wrong place. Left there, it could require that a large hole be drilled through the $400 million building's foundation. More

Big bridge projects have highs, lows
Las Vegas Review-Journal    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
The price tags were almost identical: $240 million and change. One bought an engineering marvel that, at least briefly, lured tourists away from the Strip to watch workers dangle from cranes to piece together a span 900 feet above the Colorado River. The second buys five major interchanges, 26 new bridges and a maze of frontage roads in the heart of the Las Vegas Valley. More

Labor issues stall transportation partnerships bill in Pennsylvania House of Representatives
The Daily Local News    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
The Pennsylvania state House is expected to vote on a measure allowing the state to lease roads and mass-transit operations to private companies with the goal of raising much-needed revenue for infrastructure improvements. The bill provides a broad framework for authorizing and implementing so-called "public-private partnerships," or P3, which proponents claim could help the state close a $3.5 billion annual unmet need in transportation funding.
