With President Trump and leading congressional Democrats expected to meet soon to discuss how to pay for a major new infrastructure investment package, House Majority Leader Steny Hoyer (D-Md.) says it will be crucial for Trump to push for a funding solution if a plan is to be enacted.
Michigan is not the first state to consider replacing a lot of bridges in rough shape in a relatively short amount of time. In pitching its "bridge bundling" program — an $850 million to $1 billion proposal to repair groups of bridges at once to get all of Michigan's serious and critical bridges in good shape by 2025 — the Michigan Department of Transportation references similar programs in Missouri and Pennsylvania that repaired or replaced hundreds of bridges within a handful of years.

Daily Commercial News
Total U.S. put-in-place construction spending, after increasing steadily (although slowly) for seven years, from 2011 through 2017, has lost upwards momentum over the past year and a bit. The cause of the overall weakness has been a retreating residential sector. Nonresidential has continued to exhibit a decent degree of uplift.

Montana Gov. Steve Bullock signed a series of bills Friday that allow for spending nearly $400 million on buildings, bridges and water systems across the state — an effort aimed at creating jobs, boosting the state's economy and clearing up a backlog of needed work.
The bills include money to repair or replace 14 bridges and 51 water, wastewater and sewer projects. Overall, the 2019 Legislature passed $2.7 billion in infrastructure projects, including highway projects.

For Construction Pros
The group largely agreed that the biggest challenge is the cost and aggravation of rework. Primary among the causes for rework in the eyes of participants was a lack of design completeness. Lightly defined details or poorly-coordinated building systems combined with subcontractors' need to work at least as quickly as the schedule demands can lead to complications and rework. The impacts of rework in the field are mistrust, decreased profitability and possible delays to other trades.
Traditional forecasting data, developed during a time of far less computing power and data than is currently available, does not meet today's standards for accurate planning and budgeting. These older methods simply do not predict market swings or sharp cost escalations well. But advances in technology have resulted in a new, useful tool for architects, engineers and other design professionals: predictive data. By using predictive data, design professionals can consider all future factors at play in a region, including local labor rates and material costs. This makes it much easier to complete a project within the planned budget, even when the timeframe shifts.
