Whether it’s an outstanding project/team, individual or organization, each year DBIA recognizes those who have contributed to the practice of Design-Build Done Right™.
All award winners will be acknowledged at the 2018 Design-Build Conference in Las Vegas.
- We have a new online database so not only can you submit your projects for the competition, but they’ll also be online for public recognition. We are accepting award entries for 2018 through May 23.
- If you know an individual or organization that has demonstrated leadership in the advancement of effective design-build practices and in the promotion of the use of design-build, you can submit their names for the Distinguished Design-build Leadership Awards.
- And if you know an individual who has, over their career, made significant contributions to the design and construction industry
through outstanding leadership and the advancement of integrated design-build project delivery, nominate them for the Brunelleschi Lifetime Achievement Award, DBIA’s highest award. We are accepting Brunelleschi and Distinguished Design-Build Leadership award nominations for 2018 through July 10.
This year’s Design-Build Conference & Expo in New Orleans will be like none other. It’s DBIA’s 25th Anniversary and we’re expecting a record turnout for what promises to be the design-build event of the year. There are still some exhibit and sponsorship opportunities available, but don’t delay!
Check out our exhibit hall and sign-up to join us in New Orleans.
- Maximize your Time: All show hours are non-compete hours so that exhibitors can also attend sessions.
- Network with Owners: Last year owners represented over 10% of the attendance at the 2017 Design-Build Conference & Expo in Vegas.
- Build your Team: Network with all members of the project team including general contractors, architects, engineers, MEPs, attorneys and finance professionals.
- Meet Decision Makers: Our attendees are mid to upper level management including CEOs, COOs and Vice Presidents. Network with those who have the power to make instant decisions.
In the latest episode of DBIA’s podcast, we talk to Barbara Jackson, the Director of the Burns School of Real Estate and Construction Management (RECM at the University of Denver about the leaders we have versus the leaders we need. Dr. Jackson also offers a surprising take on future generations of our industry. Will they transform it or abandon it? Listen to DBIA’s Design-Build Delivers Podcast.
DBIA’s 2018 student competition closely mirrors best practices in design-build project delivery. The two-phase competition involves the collaboration of students from diverse backgrounds, including architecture and construction management, responding to a Request for Qualifications (RFQ) for a student residence hall on a liberal arts college campus in the United States. Finalists will then respond to a Request for Proposal (RFP) and the top three short-listed teams will present in person at DBIA’s annual conference in New Orleans.
Team registration is now open until September 6, 2018. Registration and competition information is available here.

The Bond Buyer
The low-hanging fruit of advancing more infrastructure with existing revenues is design-build procurement. It creates efficiencies including shortening construction time that is estimated to save 10% to 20% versus traditional design-bid procurement methods.
The Trump administration still is sifting through a slew of financing mechanisms, from a vehicle miles traveled fee to a fuel tax, to bolster infrastructure funding, according to Transportation Secretary Elaine Chao.
Chao delivered keynote remarks May 14 to kick off Infrastructure Week, a series of transportation-related seminars across the country. Chao noted that she and fellow administration leaders are considering about 16 funding mechanisms and that none is totally supported by everyone.
International Code Council
The International Code Council is a member-focused association. It is dedicated to developing model codes and standards used in the design, build and compliance process to construct safe, sustainable, affordable and resilient structures. Most U.S. communities and many global markets choose the International Codes.
Cuomo says the $125 billion in spending would include state and federal funding along with leveraging private-sector capital to improve roads, bridges and mass transit systems, and provide more affordable housing and clean water infrastructure.

The Metropolitan Water District of Southern California and two other water districts that agreed to fund the California Waterfix tunnel project announced today the formation of a public agency that will be charged with its design and construction.

Successful design-build projects provide a multitude of value to the owner, and ultimately to the end users. These benefits include improved project quality, as well as time and cost savings. Design-build delivery also allows the contractor to establish a guaranteed budget early in the design phase. As a result, the owner can make changes, request additional value engineering or even add scope to a project before the substantial design is complete.
Cape Girardeau County commissioners settled on two design-build teams Thursday to present final proposals for construction of a new justice center. One team consists of contractor Penzel Construction Co. of Jackson and the architectural firm of Treanor HL, which has offices in Kansas City, Missouri, and other locations. The other team is composed of River City Construction of Benton, Illinois, and St. Louis architectural firm HOK.

PCL Construction and Microsoft have announced a new partnership to leverage data from construction through the life cycle of a building.
The Long Beach City Council unanimously voted to award the design-build contract for Long Beach Airport’s (LGB) Phase II Terminal Area Improvements (Phase II) Project to Swinerton Builders (Swinerton). The approval sets in motion a path toward design and construction of certain terminal features in need of modernization.
Roads & Bridges
Traffic engineers at the Pennsylvania Turnpike Commission (PTC) first tested RoadQuake 2F Temporary Portable Rumble Strips (TPRS) in live work zones in September and October of 2015. Their goal was to determine if TPRS arrays would increase driver awareness and alertness in their work zones.
Researchers at two universities are pairing ground-penetrating radar (GPR) with a cognitive, smartphone-based augmented reality app so that users can see virtual 3-D models of underground objects but also have access to a visual map of subsurface infrastructure that the app stitches together based on a network of previous scans. The radar package can potentially reduce the permitting time for digging from up to 18 months down to an afternoon, thanks to the app's ease of visually presenting underground objects and its self-learning software component, according to a University of Vermont public release published by EurekAlert!
Contractors that carve out a lucrative niche in the public construction arena might chalk it up to being able to provide a quality product, having minority or small business status, or keeping within a budget that will satisfy the owner. They’re not wrong. However, there is something else that factors into that equation -- the ability for contractors to develop and maintain sound, productive relationships with the public agencies that dole out the work.
DBIA is now accepting scholarship applications for the fifth annual Design-Build Educator Workshop. This workshop is designed to provide college educators a comprehensive understanding of all aspects of design-build, including strategies to incorporate design-build best practices into new and existing curriculum.
The three-day workshop, co-hosted by the Charles Pankow Foundation, will be held August 13-15, 2018, at the University of Denver. Full scholarships are available for qualified faculty from universities that demonstrate a commitment to enhancing their curriculum to include design-build. A limited number of scholarships are available, so please apply early.
