Design-build firms manage more than half the major construction work, said Warren, a founding member of the Design-Build Institute of America. He said design-build contracts, combining the design and construction on a project under a single contractor, typically gets the work done 25 percent to 30 percent faster and 5 percent cheaper than older methods of signing separate contracts for portions of the work. West Virginia moving forward on Route 35

State Transportation Secretary Paul Mattox says six construction firms have made the agency's shortlist to be the possible design-build firm on the U.S. Route 35 project. The state plans to construct the final 14 miles of the four-lane road in Putnam and Mason Counties, W. Va., by the end of 2013. Mattox says those firms will be asked to submit detailed proposals by the middle of next month. More

State transportation officials are seeking contractors for a roughly $130 million project to build the second phase of the I-85 Corridor Improvement Project near the Yadkin River in Davidson County, N.C. The N.C. Department of Transportation begun advertising the contract for the job. More

Erie, Pa., I-90 bridge project on schedule

The bridge that now carries Interstate 90's eastbound traffic over Six Mile Creek in Harborcreek Township, Pa., will go out with a bang in fall. The contractor plans to tear it down in October. The bridge deck will be removed and the remaining portions will be brought down with explosives, in the same manner that contractor Joseph B. Fay Co., of Russellton, brought down the old Pennsylvania Turnpike Bridge over the Allegheny River in Pittsburgh, said Eric Klimas, a project manager for Fay. More

SACS accepts $1.35 million bid for Summit roof project

Amid budget cuts and declining state revenue, Southwest Allen County Schools in Fort Wayne, Ind., is looking to pay for a project that will save the district in utility costs over the next 10 years. The SACS board voted to move forward with the Summit Middle School roofing project with its acceptance of Performance Services' bid of $1.35 million, pending paperwork approval from the U.S. Department of Energy. More
