Fast track: Design-build delivery helps plant project meet tight schedule
WaterWorld    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail
In an effort to increase production and meet the demands of its western markets, The Dannon Co. engaged MWH to develop its new multi-million dollar wastewater pretreatment system in West Jordan, Utah. The new facility was designed to pre-treat the plant's wastewater prior to discharge to the local municipality's system and enable Dannon to double yogurt production. More

Editorial: Corps of Engineers contract for New Orleans pumps raises concern
The Times-Picayune    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
New Orleans will have to wait longer for permanent pump stations to be built on its three outfall canals - but while the delay is worrisome, the reasons behind it are more so. Two losing bidders for the $700 million contract protested the corps' decision to award the contract to CBY Design Builders. The General Accounting Office, which reviewed the protests, agreed that the corps failed to properly evaluate the winning contractor's design to ensure that it can withstand the force of a storm surge. Hennepin County in Minnesota opts for design-build on interchange project
Finance & Commerce    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
Hennepin County in Minnesota tends to stick with the tried-and-true lowest responsible bidder method when it comes to purchasing construction services. But in a departure from that approach, the county board opted this week to use design-build/best value contracting - a two-step process that looks at price and technical factors - for a $70 million transit hub project next to Target Field. Illinois passes design-build law amending park district code
DBIA    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
Recently, Illinois passed a design-build bill expanding design-build authority for Illinois State Parks. Illinois HB 3458, effective immediately, amends the Park District Code by authorizing park districts to enter into design-build contracts. The law also specifies the solicitation process for design-build proposals, sets forth the requirements for the award of design-build contracts, and provides that park districts must use a two-phase procedure for the selection of the successful design-build entity for projects where the budgeted construction cost is over $12,000,000. Boost your IQ - You have the questions. We have the answers.
DBIA    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
DBIA always wants to know what challenges and opportunities practitioners and owners are facing. We listen for what's missing, what works and what doesn't to allow us to more effectively serve the industry's needs.

A case in point is the feedback we've received to DBIA's completely revised contract documents, which were launched in June 2010. We received a variety of questions about the use of the current forms and addressed a few of these questions for your information. In addition, the DBIA Contract Document Taskforce has graciously agreed to provide additional forms based on feedback from DBIA members and customers. (This will not be a wholesale revision to the new documents.) The Taskforce will be led by Robynne Thaxton-Parkinson, DBIA, who served on the 2010 Task force that revised the documents. Your questions and her answers are on the DBIA website.
