Study: Anti-cholesterol statins don't reduce melanoma risk

Despite earlier indications that people taking cholesterol-lowering statins might have a reduced risk of developing melanoma, a study of thousands of women found the popular drugs do nothing to prevent the deadly skin cancer. Evidence from experiments on cells and one trial in people had suggested some of the same properties of statins that protect against heart disease might also prevent melanoma.

Acne drug tied to a doubled risk of eye problems

Prescription pills used to treat severe acne were linked to a two-fold risk of developing eye problems, such as pink eye, styes and dryness, in a large new study from Israel. Isotretinoin, which goes by brand names including Roaccutane, Claravis and Amnesteem, is known to have serious side effects, such as bone growth delays in teenagers and miscarriages and birth defects when taken by pregnant women.

To improve those odds, advocates are encouraging more nurses to receive the training to give a forensic examination that can be key to securing a conviction.

More than 30 states now have tanning laws requiring parental consent. More than 10 states have banned bed tanning for teens of certain ages. Melanoma rates have been increasing worldwide over the last several decades, dermatologists warn. While the incidence is highest among white males, the most rapid increases from 1999 to 2008 were in white females age 15 and up, according to the National Cancer Institute and the Centers for Disease Control.

But in Virginia, both sides worked together to craft a law that outlines how they will partner to provide team-based care. The Medical Society of Virginia and the Virginia Council of Nurse Practitioners collaborated for nearly two years on the effort.
