Visitors to national parks can now carry guns
ABC News    Share   Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
Thanks to a new law, it is now legal to carry loaded guns into our national parks. The change in federal law basically means that national park visitors must obey the federal, state, and local gun laws appropriate to the parks they are visiting. It's a sharp change to previous laws that severely restricted guns in the national parks, generally requiring them to be locked or stored. More

Study finds that dogs miss many quail
The Dallas Morning News    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
Texas quail hunters have suffered through a poor hunting season, mostly because last summer's drought resulted in a poor production year for bobwhites. In the meantime, quail hunters should be encouraged by some of the Caesar Kleberg Wildlife Research Institute's findings during the South Texas Quail Research Project that ran from 1998-2008. The study followed more than 2,000 radio-collared bobwhites. More

About gun laws and gun homicides
The Charleston Daily Mail    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
The assassination attempt on Ronald Reagan nearly 30 years ago left Jim Brady, who also was shot, severely injured. His family has since dedicated itself to gun control. The Brady Campaign and Brady Center to Prevent Gun Violence advocate tighter restrictions on guns. Some, like keeping guns out of the hands of parolees and the mentally ill, are sensible. Other proposed restrictions on law-abiding citizens deserve closer examination. More

Show provides insight on hunting, fishing in Canada
The Dallas Morning News    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
Dallas-area sportsmen had an opportunity to meet 50 Canadian fishing and hunting outfitters at the All Canada Show at Southfork Ranch Convention Center. Show promoter Joel Pronty said fishing outfitters for this particular show outnumber hunting operations. "Many of the lodges do both fishing and hunting," he said. "We've got outfitters from Northwest Territories, Nunavut, Saskatchewan, Manitoba, Ontario, British Columbia and Quebec. The advantage of attending an event like this is that you get to meet the outfitter in person and get a much better feel for what to expect than you'll get via a Web site or the telephone." More

The Sidney Herald    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
The sponsor of a possible state initiative wants nonresident licenses to be available to more people instead of having outfitters enjoying an inside track. Kurt Kephart, the initiative's sponsor, explains I-161 would open hunting up to more nonresident hunters. Proponents say the problem is current law provides hunting outfitters approximately 5,500 "nonresident outfitter-sponsored big game combination licenses" each year.
