The Time to Get a Lifetime License is Now
from The Dallas Morning News
Here's the last call for a long-term bargain investment. The commodity in question is a lifetime Texas resident hunting and/or fishing license. In May, the Texas Parks and Wildlife Commission approved fee increases of 5 percent for most licenses. Costs of hunting licenses for 2009-2010 will see a slight increase. But the only sportsmen getting seriously gigged by this change are those contemplating a lifetime license. That is why anyone interested in this kind of investment should make their purchase by Aug. 31. More

Uncommonly Deadly Food Plots
from ESPN Outdoors
Johnny Appleseed's dream was to fill every valley with apple blossoms in the spring and every home with apples in the fall. Noble causes to be sure, but if Appleseed wasn't a deer hunter, he was missing out on the real "fruits" of his labor. Despite all the press newly designed plants receive for providing superior food plot forage, none of them can hold a candle to an old apple tree. After 25 years of planting food for wildlife the author is convinced apple trees trump every other whitetail deer crop, with field corn being a close second. More

Governors Form an Outdoor Caucus
from The Sun Herald
The National Governors Association conference has produced an ally for outdoors enthusiasts everywhere. Gov. Haley Barbour, R-Miss., and some of his contemporaries recently announced the formation of the Governors Sportsmen’s Caucus, patterned much like the Congressional Sportsmen’s Foundation, which has served the interest of outdoorsmen in the U.S. Congress and federal land management agencies. Sixteen governors have joined the caucus, less than half of them from the South (Gov. Sonny Perdue, R-Ga.; Gov. Phil Bredesen, D-Tenn.; Gov. Rick Perry, R-Texas; Barbour; and Gov. Bobby Jindal, R-La.). Its membership crosses party lines. More

ICAST: Where Trends Are Born
from ESPN Outdoors
Chances are, you've never heard of the International Convention of Allied Sportfishing Trades (ICAST), the huge trade show that takes place every year, usually in Las Vegas. But it's a veritable guarantee that most of the tackle now in your boat or garage was initially debuted at the show. More

New Angle on Barrels
from Gun Hunter Magazine
Now there’s a new twist in barrels, and it comes from Remington in the form of triangular barrel. Actually, the "tri-barrel" as the author chooses to call it, debuted in 2008 on the 700 VTR (Varmint/Target Rifle). The primary feature that sets the new Remingtons apart is their unique barrels, so the question must be asked: Is there any sort of benefit to a triangular barrel, or is it just a cosmetic feature?
