Start Booking Hunts At Dallas Safari Club Convention
The Outdoor Wire    Share   Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
A new year and its subsequent parade of sporting shows is drawing near. Dallas Safari Club will kickoff the 2010 procession January 7-10 with a major convention that offers serious hunters their first opportunity to shop and book dates with top outfitters. More than 300,000 square feet and 1,100 exhibits are confirmed-and some 24,000 attendees are expected-for the four-day expo, called First Light, at the new Dallas Convention Center. MORE

Uganda Ends Big Game Hunting Ban
AFP    Share   Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
Uganda is lifting a decades-old ban on big game hunting to boost tourism revenue and contain herds of crop-crunching elephants, buffalos and zebras, the wildlife service said. Uganda Wildlife Authority spokesperson Lillian Nsubuga said a deal had been agreed authorising a private company to sell sport hunting licenses in some areas of the east African country. "We have entered into a tripartite agreement with Uganda Wildlife Safaris and several district governments and we believe local people will benefit and make some good money," Nsubuga told AFP. She added that licenses will only be issued for areas not currently designated as wildlife reserves. More
U.S. Hunters, Anglers Lobby for Climate Bill
The Washington Post    Share   Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
An unlikely lobbying group is pressing the U.S. Senate to curb greenhouse gas emissions: American hunting and fishing groups who fear climate change will disrupt their sport. Twenty national hunting and fishing groups urged senators in a letter to ensure "the climate legislation you consider in the Senate both reduces greenhouse gas emissions and safeguards natural resources." Among those calling for "comprehensive" legislation were groups like the Dallas Safari Club, the National Trappers Association and Pheasants Forever. More

Elk Rifles and Cartridges
Petersen's Hunting    Share   Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
Before the advent of smokeless powder, hunters killed elk with cartridges now dismissed as unsuitable. The first small-bore, high-velocity rounds were in fact neither -- at least by current standards. Compared to the .44-40 and .45-70, though, the 7x57 and .30-40 Krag employed slender bullets that moved at scorching velocities -- over 2,000 fps. Elk haven't changed much over the last century. New elk rifles have little in common with the iron-sighted dropping-blocks and lever-actions that ushered in the metallic cartridge and thumb-diameter greased lead bullets. So what is the best cartridge for elk? More

Whitetail Body Language
American Hunter    Share   Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
Deer hunting is a wildly dichotomous sport. You sit for long hours, watching nothing but open timber as your mind wanders. Then, out of nowhere, the entire hunting season comes to its culmination. Fast and decisive action is crucial. At times like these what you need most is information you can use to anticipate the action. And you need it fast. In deer hunting this all-important feedback comes entirely from the deer. Your ability to read their body language spells the difference between success and failure. In the linked article, find several body postures common to whitetails and summaries of what each means to you as you try to decide what to do next. More

Antler Restriction Causing Much Debate Between Hunters
the San Marcos Record    Share   Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
Several years ago, six Texas counties were enlisted in an experimental whitetailed buck study. In those six counties, legal bucks for harvesting had to have a 13-inch inside spread, except for spikes. Spike bucks with at least one unbranched antlers were still legal. Results have been positive. Younger bucks are living longer and growing larger antler racks. The antlers restriction experiment has now spread to 112 counties, including 52 new additions this season. Most of these counties are in East Texas. The program has received strong support from hunters during public comment periods. But not all Texas deer hunters are excited about these legal buck changes. Those hunters more interested in putting meat in the freezer than antler size are very opposed. More
Schwarzenegger Signs Ammuntion Regulation Bill
the San Francisco Chronicle    Share   Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
People buying ammunition in California will soon have to be thumbprinted and dealers will have to keep records of sales, under legislation that Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger signed into law. After vetoing similar bills three times since 2004, Schwarzenegger signed AB962 by Assemblyman Kevin de León, D-Los Angeles, saying he now believes it will promote public safety. More

Tips for Hunting Bobcats and Coyotes
the St. Louis Post-Dispatch    Share   Share on FacebookTwitterShare on
LinkedinE-mail article
When it comes to hunting predators, Tad Brown, of Preston, Mo., is your expert. Brown is also well-known as a superb turkey hunter, and until recently whitetail bowhunter. The whitetail part, however, got in the way of his predator hunting. Finding predators is second nature for Brown. Coyotes, he says, can be found just about anywhere. Bobcats are everywhere too, but you have to know where to look. More

Decoying Magic: Tips From The Experts
North American Whitetail    Share   Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
When coupled with calling, a decoy provides a buck with a visual confirmation that what he heard was real. One or more decoys can also have a calming effect on a suspicious buck that is playing it safe and being too cautious to approach your setup. These are just a few of the advantages of hunting with decoys, but simply throwing up a fake just anywhere is not going to get the job done. The linked article take a close look at the decoying secrets and setups the pros use to consistently tag giants all across the country. More
