South Africa hardens its stance on rhino trophy hunts
The Globe and Mail
Share

Alarmed by record levels of rhino poaching this year, South Africa is launching a crackdown on one of its most lucrative tourist attractions: trophy hunting. So far this year, 324 rhinos have been illegally killed in South Africa, usually shot by organized gangs of criminals who sever the rhino horns for trafficking to Vietnam and China. The slaughter this year is expected to far exceed the record total of 333 rhinos
killed by poachers last year.

Archery hunters and those armed with Managed Lands Deer Permits have been able to hunt all month, but for hundreds of thousands of folks from the top of Texas
to the bottom, the first Saturday sunrise in November may as well be Christmas morning. There's no doubt Mother Nature has been brutal this year, and no matter where you find yourself on opening morning, it's sure to be a wait in less than stellar conditions. However, as in previous seasons affected by drought, there's really no such thing as a bad day when it comes to Texas deer hunting.

Boy with one arm proves he's a sure shot as a hunter
The Everett Daily Herald
Share

Justin Ristine, 11, might be the best one-armed hunter around. If ability is judged by percentage of shots fired compared to deer taken, he's as good a hunter
as there is, one arm or two. On his first hunting trip earlier this month, he fired one shot and bagged one deer. The buck died instantly. The Marysville, Wash., boy was born with only one arm, his left. He fired the shot from a rifle set on a tripod.

Nearby, two children with hearing protection watched as dad practiced his shot. The Crossroads, Texas, white-tailed deer hunting season kicks off Nov. 5 and hunters, retailers and wildlife personnel alike are all gearing up for the

Bobwhite quail population hit hard by drought
San Angelo Standard-Times
Share

Biologists and hunters have known for decades that Texas bobwhite quail populations were on a slippery slope, but now after a blistering, yearlong drought on
top of past hard years, the Texas Parks & Wildlife Department is running up the red flag. "The drought has taken a toll on all Texas wildlife resources, but among the hardest hit is the bobwhite quail. This iconic game bird faces mounting obstacles to recovery and wildlife leaders say drought is exacerbating the problem," says Steven Lightfoot, spokesman for the TPWD.

A stern warning: Never assume your rifle, scope will work

Now that hunting season is here, many of us are tempted to grab our trusted smokepoles and head for the fields and forests. But what your trusted smokepole may
hand you, rather than a dead animal, is a sharp rap in the nuts, metaphorically speaking, of course. You never, ever, assume that a rifle/scope will work.

Hunting pre-rut — Rubbing phase bucks
Hunting Net
Share

In much of North America late summer and early fall are the start of the pre-rut and/or rubbing phase for white-tailed deer. As their testosterone levels begin to rise the bucks start rubbing trees and shrubs to remove the dried velvet from their antlers. While many hunters know that bucks begin rubbing at this time, they may not realize that bucks may also begin making scrapes at this time. These early season scrapes often go
undetected by hunters, because they are either not looking for them, or they don't recognize them as scrapes.

Zip ties are a great invention and almost as indispensable as duct tape for repairing, fixing or strengthening a whole variety of items. The author likes to carry several different sizes from 4 inch to 16 inch in his hunting pack. Specifically, he likes to use them for deer and antelope to help keep the carcass closed while dragging them from the field back
to the truck.

Plenty of deer, plenty of fun hunting in Texas
The Bakersfield Californian
Share

Texas big game hunters live in the land of giant. Ask a Texan and they'll give you an earful of just how huge the Lone Star State can be for gun owners and hunters. Give them half a chance and they'll
brag about managing their exotic animal herds, some endangered in their native countries, but now far outnumbering the ones barely eking out a living in their former homes.

It's been said that good things are worth waiting for. That's certainly the case when it comes to the years of hard work and management required to develop a top-notch hunting ranch. More than a decade ago, Paul Dubose began doing everything necessary to develop his 6,000 acre Freestone County ranch into
a great hunting destination. Luke Clayton discovered Dubose's Clay Hill Ranch back in the spring on a fishing trip/hog hunt.

How to build a better permanent deer stand base
Big Game Hunt
Share

The author has hunted many years in the Southeast areas of Ohio. Much of that hunting was done from deer stands - mobile (mass manufactured produced steel) stands as well as the old fashioned home-made stands. Dad has about 15+ stands on his property. At least half are homemade deer stands. My tip here is to easily provide to you a very sturdy and long lasting wooden deer stand base.

In the darkness before morning, Donal, our intuitive stalker and guide, took a piece of tissue from his pocket and let it drift into the air – we would have to take the mountain by the west face.
The skills of deer stalking require the hunter to beat the deer's senses. These beautiful creatures could smell us from three miles away, hence the tissue in our pursuit of the elusive sika deer – you have to track downwind of your prey.

Western Montana hunters see mixed bag on big-game season opening weekend

For the second year in a row, hunters found plenty of opportunity to fill their freezers with elk meat in the Big Hole Valley, but elsewhere in western Montana most critters stayed clear of the
bull's-eye on opening weekend of big-game season. In another record-setting opening day, biologists counted 86 elk at the Darby check station over one weekend.
